2023-05-08 19:48:06 +0000 UTCHeh - I never even thought of parsing it that way. :) Yeah, I think I would choose to rephrase slightly, because "take him" and "take him in" are both expressions that could be used about adopting a stray. Maybe just simplify "the first times" to "before"?

They were my last living connections to her, until one cat (the runt) died of natural causes, the dog died after too much knockout juice from the vet shut down her kidneys, and the other cat became the neighbour's cat because at that point, I just wasn't taking care of him anymore. 25 years later, I *could* take a new pet - a neighbour has offered more than once - but then I'd eventually lose them too, even if I did everything right.
