New NJB: Not Just Bikes is 1 Year Old!

Not Just Bikes is one year old! I uploaded the first "Video Essay" in October of 2019. This video looks back over the past year of Not Just Bikes, and about how the channel has changed over the past year.

... yeah, it's a "clip show" episode. 🤣 But hopefully still enjoyable!

Coming back to this: I totally get you want to see it first-hand :) But yeah, corona makes all things more difficult. I did film some footage in the meantime! The raw material is about 3.3 GB (26 minutes); is that workable with your upload link? Because cutting the footage up into parts is always an option. I'll also include some info with it, so you know what you're looking at. :-)

Cool, thanks! I wouldn't worry too much about it, as I am OK for now, but if you do find yourself able to film some of the streets near you, here are the suggestions I have for filming: https://notjustbikes.com/contribute/ Thanks!

Hey Nick, I'd be happy to get some footage of F35. But for most of my footage from the Netherlands, I'm trying to get it myself, because I want to experience it first-hand before I try to talk about it. Still, with the pandemic, it's become harder for me to get to places farther away in the Netherlands, like Enschede. If you have clips to upload some time, let me know, and I'll provide you with a custom upload URL. Thanks!

Hey Donovan, It would be great to get footage from Portland! They're a city that, like you say, is doing a lot right, but still has a long ways to go. Here is my page for information about contributing: https://notjustbikes.com/contribute/ If you have some video to send me, send me an email or a message on Patreon and I'll set up a custom upload URL for you. Thanks!

Hey if you need footage, Portland has some interesting examples of the way North American cities are (or failing at) implementing bike and transit infrastructure. Two blocks away from me is a street that was built with local improvement district funds. It's 2 blocks and 2 intersections of protected cycle track, one raised intersection, and a really tiny protected intersection with stop signs(and tiny stops signs for the bikes for some reason) to reconnect the area I live in to the one north of it cut off by the end of a freeway. Furthermore Portland is a really good example of how North American cities can build really good bike infrastructure but fail to build out a system leaving much of what they built underutilized. Also, the city has recently started to lay down "rose lanes"(red painted transit lanes) and BAT(Business access and transit lanes, which are essentially lanes that were turned into right turn and parallel parking/ curb cut access lanes with through traffic allowed to transit and trucks). I'm not sure how effective these BAT lanes will be considering there are still 3 lanes of one way traffic next to them, but it's the cheap "solution" to the problem. I doubt they'll be seeing the results they want without a more systematic approach. But if there's something specific you're looking for I can probably find it here because Portland usually takes the "throw it at the wall" approach. Unfortunately they just don't go far enough sometimes or step back from an idea (like the diverter 2 blocks from me that was cut back to allow one way traffic through, but since there's enough room for a car, people will still ignore the signs and go the wrong direction).

I'd also be willing to provide footage of small to medium US cities (and medium-large in a pinch). Might take a bit to get the logistics arranged, though

It's funny you mentioned crowd sourcing, because I was recently thinking about filming some material on the cycling highway F35 here in Enschede/Hengelo, and sending it you. The cycling highway is an ongoing project where cities in the Twente region are being connected to a cycling highway that either circumvents or passes over car routes, or gives cyclists the right of way. I thought it might either be a cool possible subject for a video, or simply some nice footage for you to use elsewhere.
