Medieval Church Paintings Revealed

When we were in the UK Julie and I visited one of our favourite churches at Burton Dassett, but this one is rather special for its original medieval paintings.  This ancient church features in the Doomsday book, so I feel very lucky to be able to share a thousand years of history with you.

Yep, such are the layers of history and so many people before us.

With that little medieval door and they way you react, I do exactly the same. I touch a brick of a castle and think "wonder if the person putting this here would think I would still be touching it hundreds of years later"

Chris

You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻

Kevin Hicks

Great stuff, I've never been to the Czech Republic.

Kevin Hicks

What a lovely way to put it Marco, thank you. Sadly though I'm not sure the architecture and buildings they tend to throw up these days will survive even 50 years let alone hundreds.

Kevin Hicks

Oh yes, that's for sure, you only have to look at Tintern Abbey for evidence of that. St Fagans is an amazing museum and yes, I've been to St Teilo's too, the paintings are quite something. 👍🏻

Kevin Hicks

Haha, cheers Dan 👍🏻

Wow, thanks for sharing, incredible history there, thank goodness Cromwell and his prudes didn't destroy it, guess you can tell I have Irish in me and no love for The Lord Protector! Until the next one cheers!

If you visit St Fagans Museum in South Wales, you can visit St Teilo's Church. This has been decorated to show what a pre-Reformation church would have looked like with wall paintings, a rood screen and choir loft. I cannot imagine the effect it would have had on the congregation of the time seeing Bible stories as vivid multi-coloured paintings. People who if they could read at all had certainly never owned a book. I found it quite emotional to realise just how much of our culture had been destroyed in the 16th and 17th centuries.

I simply love your enthusiasm for history, and I do share it as well. History involves so much more than events themselves, and history of the people is usually so much more interesting. Thanks for sharing this with us.

So we can sum up: Puritans did the opposite of what they really intended. Instead of hiding the paintings they, unintendendly, preserved them for generations to come. I hope our generation will do equally good in preserving this present from the past to make it available for generations to come.

Another fantastic video, Kevin. I'm fascinated by Medieval architecture. Especially religious buildings. A few years ago I took a trip to Sedlec Ossuary and Saint Barbara's Cathedral in the Czech Republic. Absolutely amazing.

Haha, you can find history in the most surprising places

Kevin Hicks

Never thought I would be interested looking at the inside of a church haha
