Here it is guys & gals, John "Babbacome" Lee, the man they couldn't hang.  What a strange story.  It was fascinating doing the research to find there was so much more to the story..... conflicting evidence, thoughts and opinions etc., so here I had to just try and focus on the key elements.

I hope you enjoy it, and if you'd like to delve deeper take a look at the website:  http://murderresearch.com/johnlee/

The video is scheduled to go live on YouTube on Friday.

Cheers John, I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. I'll be getting around to the ECW at some point đŸ‘đŸ»

Excellent film again, feel like I arrived a little late to the party. Yet another crazy story I never would have heard of, I'm seriously curious how you find these off the wall small subjects to bring to us, and very happy you do. And too cool, thanks very much for the shout out at the end. On a side note, just received my copy of your recommended book "going to the wars" on the English Civil War, many thanks and can't wait to get Into it

John Pessoa

Sorry Jodie, I'm not actually sure, but further attempts were stopped by the medical officer and the case was then referred to the Home Secretary & Queen Victoria.

IDK, I mean, his actions later in life were not good and righteous, but I don't think I can really blame him for going a bit wild and exploitive - After all, he was almost executed three times for something he might not have done, all to possibly save a Great Expectation's character gentleman, only then to spend the next 20 years in a Victorian prison... I'm more amazed that he made it to the 1940's and didn't die by some misadventure

Robert Munson

Was this the case where it was ruled that if something happened to prevent the execution 3 times that the sentence was reversed because it was considered divine intervention? Or was that an early Medieval that had since been dropped?

Jodie Giacalone

It is an interesting story, but a shame there is no conclusive evidence either way. The website you listed does not give much insight at all. There will always be these types of cases, where true guilt can never be determined.

David A Strother

Thanks Michael, the website I mentioned in the description also has a whole load of the reports from various people. Lucky for John eh?

Kevin Hicks

The would-be executioner was James Berry. You can read his account of the failed execution in his book "My Experiences as an Executioner" which is available at the Gutenberg Project. Chapter VII gives the text of his report to the Under-Sherriff of Devon which gives details of the location and the possible causes of the problems with the trapdoor.

Great story, possibly the "Devil taking care of His own" or incredible luck.
