A brief history of the History Squad

After a couple of requests, I thought I'd share with you how a kid from the arse end of Birmingham, an ex soldier & policeman by sheer luck, managed to carve not one, but two new careers for himself sharing the history he loves.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try and answer them if you'd like to leave a note in the comments or message me directly.

Thanks as ever for your brilliant support!

Absolutely, a story for another day 😜

Kevin Hicks

Good heavens, I'm so glad you survived, especially during such a tumultuous time in that part of the world. Truly amazing where life's paths lead and how.

RAW DOME

Hi Daniel, thanks & welcome. The skin condition I have is called vitiligo, a loss of skin pigment triggered sometimes by shock/stress, in my case it started after I was caught in a bomb blast in Northern Ireland 👍🏻

Kevin Hicks

I love this video, especially the young Kevin with his bow and arrow. Definitely feels like it would be a good video to make public at some point. Although I'm wondering now if your skin condition is the result of your leaping into burning buildings?

Daniel Waddington

Best way to retire! I love that you got to experience so many eras in your reenactment/educational career.

Miss Bobbi

no no its ok mate. i kinda dropped myself in it with the username XD

PC Brummie

Ah brilliant, sorry for the assumption 😂

Kevin Hicks

just got finished watching the Battle of Evesham video, saw that shout out Cheers Kev! also forgot to say the PC part of my name is a reference to South Park im not a Police officer. My grandad was though, im always getting him to tell me stories from his days in the Force. keep doing what you do our kev

PC Brummie

I think what your doing is great Kev!! I certainly live all of your videos and the YouTube videos of you at Warwick Castle are great! Very Good Archer Sir. I have another bow being made for me so I will try and shoot as half as good as you do, which I doubt I will!! 😂😂. Best wishes. Dave.

Dave Sheppard

It is in fact our distinct pleasure. Thank YOU, sir.

Hi Dan, yes although I didn't mention the encounters on the video, I heard voices on a couple of occasions and one apparition in the Undercroft, at the top of what used to be some stairs that have long been blocked off. The scariest thing at Warwick though was me LOL

Kevin Hicks

I was watching a YouTube video on the ghosts of Warrick Castle, was wondering Keven when you where there did you encounter any spirits or such, please let me know if you did and thanks!

Dan De Lench

Cheers Pete, you don't know how much I appreciate you and all my other Patreon's here. Your support is invaluable.

Kevin Hicks

Many thanks for sharing that with us Kevin 👊. It’s an absolute privilege and honor for me to be here. I greatly respect all your knowledge and passion for immersive learning.

Pete Neiner (9er)

It really is my pleasure, thanks.

Kevin Hicks

Thanks Marco, you're right, and we're nearing 200k subscribers which is beyond anything I was expecting, so yes it's quite wonderful. As I've promised viewers more 'Berlin' stories, I'll include the house fire story there, but essentially it was during my last week in Germany, I was having supper with some German friends when we heard someone cry 'fire'. We went outside to find the next door house on fire and there was a couple trapped upstairs. I smashed through the door but was beaten back by the flames but then managed with a neighbour to find a ladder and get it to the top window where upon I climbed up and got the couple out.

Kevin Hicks

Thanks, Kevin, for the story about how the History Squad came about. I do really enjoy your stories and history lessons. Thank you for your service, and your service to the children as well.

David A Strother

And we love watching!

Ethan Marvin

You have a brilliant way to retire- do what you love and gather a bunch of people around you that share your interests. And seems to be really a lot of people, visible in the way your Youtube Channel is growing. Was interesting to see the old photo's of yours, would love to hear and see more of that stuff. (What was that with the burning house in Germany....?)

Marco Engelbracht

Cheers buddy 👍

Kevin Hicks

nice one Kev :-)

JD

How lovely, I'm sure you'll enjoy passing your love of Robin Hood to your little one too.

Kevin Hicks

Indeed, what should have been retirement has led now post-COVID to YouTube, and I'm also very proud to deliver my kind of history to Inuit and remote schools here in Canada, even those up inside the Arctic Circle through a great organization called Connected North. It was a learning curve for sure, teaching these kids who are so far removed from what we know and take for granted every day, but they seem to like the history and always come back for more.

Kevin Hicks

I just pressed the wrong button on my keyboard! I meant to add that you have answered my question about how you came to move to Canada.

Michael Williams

That's a great story, and it proves that if you love what you're doing it isn't really work. I was born in 1950, so my childhood was filled with stories about the two world wars, and from that I got more and more interested in history and that love has never gone away.

Michael Williams

I love your story Kevin, it’s amazing sometimes how things fall into place. Though I do envy your work from castles and other historical places, not much of that here in the states outside of Revolution and Civil War, so there’s no much call for the Middle Ages outside of the reenactment community. My passion for the Middles Ages began with Robin Hood as well, and would you believe it? I just recently found the very first book I ever read on the Robin stories!
