Stream audio directly into discord with your own, locally run discord bot

Delivering a great atmosphere to my players is a great concern of mine, and I was just not satisfied with the audio quality of my ambience sounds that I fed into Discord by using a sophisticated Voicemeet Banana setup (check that software out, it's great in it's own accord). I then learned that Discord bots can have a way better audio quality that is suited for music, too and I started digging.

Using both an audio capturing library and the fantastic Discord library for node, Discord.js, I managed to have a working tool that

Even while the tool does not deliver the user experience I am normally striving for, I want to at least tell you about my discord atmosphere bot. You can find it on my Github page. If you are curious and a little bit technically inclined, give it a shot and report back.

It runs on node and it's tested on Windows 10. An installation instruction can be found in the README coming with the package.

I will update this post once my player will have feedback for me on Monday! Let's see how they like it! We will be probably streaming the next session, too, you can have a listen to some german Dungeons & Dragon players and have a listen to the audio quality, too on my twitch channel.

Have fun!

Well, the bot joins your channel as a client, too. I don't know enough about Discord permissions, but I think they might be able to mute the bot. Unless you might be able to disallow that?

That's very cool - it also means I can force my players to listen to my choice of background sounds whether they like it or not - or miss out on the whole game. Currently players mute the fvtt as soon as they hit a noisy area.
