Since I was working on file I/O I figured I'd look into ZIP support as well. Fortunately, turns out it extremely easy to write support for. I implemented it using this library which is extremely straightforward to include and use: https://github.com/richgel999/miniz
One nice thing about ZIP files is that they can't be created as solid archives. This means mod authors don't need to check compression settings when making them. When packaging 7Zip or RAR archives, I highly recommend turning off the solid archive setting (7Zip defaults to on, and WinRAR defaults to off). Solid archives have higher compression, but reading individual files from them is extremely slow.
