Lore: Demons (part 2)

Although the celestial and demonic hierarchies differ from each other and have different ranks, they do share some similarities. In particular the archangels and the archons, who are their demonic counterparts. Like their enemies they're the only estates, along with the common demons, that have come into contact with the earthly plane. Their powers are related to the sins to which they are bound, and they have enhanced abilities.

Yet they have rarely been seen performing and, unlike the archangels, aren't usually found on the earthly plane. Their entrance is usually accompanied by pomp and pageantry, and as soon as they finish their duties, they usually return with some speed to hell. Even among their own kind they are often considered an 'undesirable inconvenience'. If the archons are in action it is usually a symptom that something very bad is going to happen.

The seven archons

• ████████ (Pride): No one has been able to reproduce his name, so he calls himself the 'leader of the seven' and is often allowed by his companions to say so, even if they disagree. He's also famously known as the 'giver of gifts'. Though their gifts are rarely well received and are considered a curse rather than a virtue. A young man who, instead of speaking, throws gold coins every time he opens his mouth, an old man with the ability to hear the darkest thoughts of those around him, or the ability to assassinate with his mind, are some of these extravagant gifts. Loves lavishness, praise and wanton chaos. It can also be somewhat whimsical and childish. Loves drama and attention, but has a natural aversion to light, his great weakness.
• Belfegor (Sloth): This huge devil with a curious mind who is constantly lost in her own machinations. She often hatches plans that are too complex and outlandish to be carried out, involving too much effort and resources. As a restless being, she's of the opinion that to remain in a static state is the death of the mind. Facilitating humanity is only a small step towards creating a disconnected, useless and submissive society that could be controlled like a herd of peaceful sheep. Although the idea is shared by others of their kind, usually a raid with a few dead is quicker and more effective than trying to monitor and control everything.
• Amon (Wrath): It is said that the power of this archon is such that his only rare interventions are through representations such as fire, mirrors and dreams. The fiery wrath of Amon is an unstoppable force of nature, which once unleashed leaves nothing behind. Anyone who has been in his presence (human or supernatural), even through a representation, is never the same again. It is said that he 'inspired' the archangel Jophiel to pluck out their own eye.
• Leviathan (Envy): They have always felt more affinity for possessing towering creatures than humans, but these beasts are rarely able to survive their presence. Their capacity for destruction is incredible, but so is their calmness in knowing when to retreat. Often, they have been seen as cowards for making decisions that ensured the survival of themselves or their hosts. But to Lucifer that was only a sign of intelligence. They are often unable to control their feelings and can create great scandals if they feel disadvantaged - which is often the case. They have a deep hatred for humanity, born out of resentment. They are openly in favour of wiping the human race off the face of the earth and leaving only the beasts to roam the land. An opinion which, although thye expresses it assiduously, no one usually shares.
• Asmodeo (Lust): Unlike some of his peers, Asmodeo would describe his feeling for humans as 'love'. But a twisted, addictive and obsessive love. He's one of the few who tries to prolong his stay for purely selfish reasons. He's only sent out when a big skirmish is necessary. Asmodeo has a special talent for mobilising the masses and involving them in his vices. In a few seconds an office building can become an army of lustful followers with little thirst for blood and a lot of sex. He is also jealous and capricious and can often take offence and change plans just because of his sentimentality. Only the demons with whom he shares sin usually agree with his methods (and results).
• Mammon (Greed): This demon loves conspiracies, treachery and manipulation and that is why he has found in greed a vein with which to concoct his plans. The temptation for power, wealth and status is the cornerstone of his behind-the-scenes whisperings. He can easily find his way to the powerful and has an unrivalled power of conviction. Normally, Mammon's plans and hell's often go hand in hand. Where he sees a terribly amusing game, hell can see a key to more power. However, he has a bad habit of being unfaithful and even betraying his own allies.
• Beelzebub (Gluttony): Also known as the 'lord of the flies' because he's always accompanied by a large number of these insects. He's probably one of the most dangerous archons since his personal motivations are not usually an impediment to carry out the orders given to him. He is calm, calculating and reliable, which is why, along with Leviathan, he is one of Lucifer's favourite archons. Although unpleasant, both in appearance and because of his terrible companions, he is charismatic and inspirational. A motivating voice that feeds the flame of greed to the point of exhaustion. To Beelzebub he is just further proof of human weakness. A sign of insignificance and mediocrity.

Differences with other demons

They have no bodies of their own, as their essence is not on this plane. They need a human or avatar to act as a link to enter earth. Although in this state their powers are reduced compared to their original state, they are still terribly powerful. Their avatars are always humans with extraordinary characteristics or powerful priests, since the essence of archons can hardly be contained. Even in this state of possession, they are able to transform and maintain full control over the body they enter. After their departure, the body they used as a bond may be destroyed and rendered useless.

They are easily distinguishable because they have four pairs of horns instead of two. Also, their size is considerably larger than that of an ordinary demon and they have more strength and talents than any other. These include their ability to 'inspire' others with their sins.

Aunque las jerarquía de la organización celestial y de la demoniaca no se parecen y tienen estamentos diferentes, comparten algunas similitudes. En concreto el de los arcángeles y el de los arcontes, que son su contraparte demoníaca. Al igual que sus enemigos son los únicos estamentos, junto a los demonios comunes, que han entrado en contacto con el plano terrenal. Sus poderes están relacionados con los pecados a los que están vinculados y cuentan con capacidades aumentadas.

Aún así, rara vez se les ha visto actuar y, a diferencia de los arcángeles, no suelen encontrarse en el plano terrenal. Su entrada suele venir acompañada de pompa y boato y en cuanto terminan sus funciones, suelen regresar con cierta rapidez al infierno. Incluso entre los suyos suelen ser considerados un ‘inconveniente indeseable’. Si los arcontes entran en acción suele ser un síntoma de que algo muy malo va a suceder.

Los siete arcontes

• ████████(Soberbia): Nadie ha sido capaz de reproducir su nombre, así que se hace llamar así mismo el ‘líder de los siete’ y a menudo sus compañeros le permiten decirlo, aunque no estén de acuerdo. También es famoso por ser reconocido como el ‘dador de dones’. Aunque sus regalos rara vez son bien recibidos y se consideran una maldición más que una virtud. Un joven que en vez de pronunciar palabra arroja monedas de oro cada vez que abre su boca, un anciano con la capacidad de oír los pensamientos más oscuros de quienes lo rodean o la habilidad de asesinar con la mente, son algunos de esos extravagantes regalos. Le encanta lo fastuoso, el elogio y el caos gratuito. También puede ser algo caprichose e infantil. Ama el drama y la atención, pero tiene una aversión natural por la luz, su gran punto débil.
• Belfegor (Pereza): Esta enorme diablesa tiene una mente curiosa que se pierde constantemente en sus propias maquinaciones. A menudo, urde planes demasiado complejos y estrafalarios para ser llevados a cabo, que incluyen demasiados esfuerzos y recursos. Como ser inquieto, es de la opinión de que mantenerse en estado estático es la muerte de la mente. Dar facilidades a la humanidad es solo un pequeño paso para crear una sociedad desconectada de la realidad, inutil y sumisa, a la que se podría controlar como un rebaño de pacíficas ovejas. Aunque la idea es compartida por otros de sus congéneres, normalmente una incursión con algunos muertos, es más rápido y eficaz que tratar de monitorizar y controlarlo todo.
• Amón (Ira): Se dice que el poder de este arconte es tal, que sus únicas y contadas intervenciones, las hace a través de representaciones como el fuego, los espejos y los sueños. La abrasadora ira de Amón es una fuerza de la naturaleza imparable, que una vez desatada no deja nada tras de sí. Cualquiera que haya estado en su presencia (humano o sobrenatural), aunque sea a través de una representación, no vuelve a ser el mismo. Se dice que ‘inspiró’ a la arcángel Jophiel para que se sacara su propio ojo.
• Leviatán (Envidia): Siempre ha sentido más afinidad por poseer criaturas imponentes ante que humanos, pero estas bestias rara vez son capaces de sobrevivir a su presencia. Su capacidad de destrucción es increíble, pero también su serenidad para saber cuando retirarse. A menudo, se le ha visto como cobarde por tomar decisiones que aseguraban la supervivencia de elle o sus huestes. Pero para Lucifer eso solo era un signo de inteligencia. A menudo es incapaz de controlar sus sentimientos y puede crear grandes escándalos si se siente desfavorecido -cosa que pasa habitualmente-. Siente un profundo odio hacia la humanidad, nacido del resentimiento. Es abiertamente partidarie de eliminar la raza humana de la faz de la tierra y solo dejar a las bestias campar por ella. Opinión que aunque expresa con asiduidad, nadie suele compartir.
• Asmodeo (Lujuria): A diferencia de otros de sus compañeros, Asmodeo describiría su sentimiento hacia los humanos como ‘amor’. Pero un amor torcido, adictivo y obsesivo. Es de los pocos que trata de prolongar su estancia por motivos meramente egoístas. Solo es enviado cuando es necesario hacer una gran escaramuza. Asmodeo tiene un talento especial para movilizar masas y hacerlas partícipes de sus vicios. En pocos segundos un edificio de oficinas puede convertirse en un ejército de lujuriosos adeptos con poca sed de sangre y mucha de sexo. También es celoso y caprichoso y a menudo puede ofenderse y cambiar los planes trazados solo por su sentimentalismo. Solo los demonios con los que comparte pecado suelen estar de acuerdo con sus métodos (y resultados).
• Mammón (Avaricia): Este demonio ama las conspiraciones, la traición y la manipulación y es por eso que ha encontrado en la avaricia un filón con el que urdir sus planes. La tentación de obtener poder, riquezas y estatus es la piedra angular de sus susurros entre bambalinas. Con facilidad se abre paso hasta los poderosos y tiene un poder de convicción sin igual. Normalmente, los planes de Mammón y los del infierno suelen ir de la mano. Donde él ve un juego terriblemente divertido, el infierno puede vislumbrar una pieza clave para conseguir más poder. No obstante, tiene la mala costumbre de mostrarse poco fiel y de, incluso, traicionar a sus propios aliados.
• Belcebú (Gula): También conocido como el ‘señor de las moscas’ porque siempre suele ir acompañado de una gran cantidad de estos insectos. Es, probablemente, uno de los arcontes más peligrosos dado que sus motivaciones personales no suelen ser un impedimento para cumplir las órdenes que se le dan. Es tranquilo, calculador y confiable, por eso, junto a Leviatán es uno de los arcontes favoritos de Lucifer. Aunque resulte desagradable, tanto en apariencia, como por sus terribles acompañantes, es carismático e inspirador. Una voz motivadora que alimenta la llama de la codicia hasta el empacho. Para belcebú es solo una prueba más de la debilidad humana. Un signo de insignificancia y mediocridad.

Diferencias con el resto de demonios

No poseen cuerpos propios, dado que su esencia no se encuentra en este plano. Necesitan un humano o avatar que haga de vínculo para entrar en la tierra. Aunque  en este estado sus poderes se ven reducidos en comparación a su estado original, siguen siendo terriblemente poderosos. Sus avatares son siempre humanos con características extraordinarias o sacerdotes poderosos, dado que la esencia de los arcontes, difícilmente se puede  contener. Incluso en este estado de posesión, son capaces de transformarse y mantienen pleno control sobre el cuerpo en el que entran. Tras su marcha, es posible que el cuerpo que usaron como vínculo quede destrozado e inservible.

Son fácilmente distinguibles, porque, además, cuentan con cuatro pares de cuernos en vez de dos. También, su tamaño es considerablemente más grande que el de un demonio corriente y cuentan con más fuerza y talentos que cualquier otro. Entre ellos, destaca su capacidad para ‘inspirar’ a otros con sus pecados.
