The First Mission | La Primera Misión [Arael]

Since she had come to earth, some years had passed. Arael still hadn't gotten used to her strange human body, full of limitations and sensations that she didn't know what use they were. Of these, itching was the most disconcerting. That urge to scratch his skin in a violent and damaging way that she could rarely resist. The itching, along with involuntary muscle spasms, hiccups, sneezing, stomach rumbling and other physical behaviours, but there was something much worse, much more difficult to explain in words: feelings. Any preparation she had been given before her arrival was too little. Human emotions weren't something that could be controlled with simple restraint, they were a wave, a tide in which you could only drift, trying not to drown. Arael looked around her, human and supernatural, facing all those imperfections, those impulses, and wondered how they could stand, working on their little projects, forming families, in short, growing. It seemed to her something worthy of admiration. A proof of human strength.
An angel stepped out of the next room, snapping her out of her own thoughts. Arael rose to her feet and in restrained silence followed them into the room. She had never been there before, so she felt overwhelmed even though it wasn't a particularly large or imposing place. It was more like a small dungeon with about four cells set into the rock walls. The neon lights and technological conveniences gave the place a neat and tidy feel, far removed from the idea of a dank and dreary prison. The only thing that made it different was its engraving in the stone in bright, flashing glyphs. A human wouldn't know what was written there, but an angel would. She swallowed before Hana took a couple of steps forward with his hands behind his body.
"Hello," he greeted with an empty grimace. Hana was the exception that confirmed the rule, if the rest suffered the consequences of feeling too much everything around them, he seemed immune to earthly charms. To such an extent that his emotions always seemed to be fake, feigned, a mere representation to make those who had him in front of them feel comfortable.
"Hello," Arael repeated, swallowing her saliva. The atmosphere around the angel chief was always oppressive and terrible.
"Today is the day. You have been preparing yourself with effort and tenacity for a long time and, at last, you will be able to face evil in the face" that statement was precisely the confirmation of all his fears. Arael was an angel of sacrifice and compassion. She wasn't made for fighting, or plotting schemes against demons. She had come down with the intention of protecting, not attacking. In a way, that was a huge disappointment to Hana, who had already assumed that his depleted army would remain depleted. Still, that wasn't going to spare her from the rite of passage that was about to begin. "Here, take it."
Hana invited her to take a holographic paper with a small report on the demon she was to guard. It would be a simple mission, and with any luck, the responsibility would be lifted in a couple of years and she wouldn't have to know anything more about it.
"I need to know everything he does. When he leaves the house, when he returns, what time he enters the Church of Raziel, everything. Do you understand?" Arael nodded.
" What has he done?" she asked after a while of silence.
"Does it matter?" Missions were missions, and in Hana's military mindset they were not to be questioned. Another habit that was taking some getting used to. "He's a confidant." He gave in with a sigh. "I need to know if he's helping us or if he's just a double agent," Arael shivered slightly in his place. That sounded a lot more serious than he thought he would be charged with. There was a lot at stake and they were putting it in his inexperienced hands.
"I... I don't know if I'll be up to it," she said honestly as she flipped through the report more restlessly and tenaciously. The details stuck in her brain like little scraps of scattered information. Musician, tendencies towards vice and substance abuse. "I don't know if I'll be able to fight it in case...."
"Nonsense! The job is a simple one, Arael. You've had years of training so you can deal with something like this. He's non-violent, hedonistic, careless and has a lot more to lose than we do. Make your report and make sure you don't get caught. That is all. No more is asked of you than a simple act of compromise," Hana's voice sounded impatient and annoyed, "Any objections?"
"Yes!" Arael's perplexed look gave her away in a blatant lie. Hana narrowed her eyes with a stern look. The angel had forgotten where he was and what that meant.
"Speak," Hana urged her.
"I didn't mean that..." She tried to excuse herself."
"But your tongue said so, and that's because... you don't respect my authority? Is that an unfair or cruel plan?" His way of putting it didn't help. Arael bit his lip before replying with a premeditated, controlled sentence.
"No, not at all," she ducked her head in intimidation, "I just don't think I might not be the best person for the task. It's an important mission and I haven't done this before," Hana sighed, and it was noticeable that the atmosphere between the two of them relaxed again. If he had felt that his authority was being undermined, he had now changed his mind.
"It's normal for you to have doubts. But you have nothing to fear," he said, pointing to a specific piece of information in the report. "He will be here tonight. He'll have a performance in a small bar on the base. A lot of bounty hunters gather there, so he may be up to something. Be wary of everything and everyone. Evil is deceitful and it doesn't stop," Arael nodded a couple of times without daring to raise her voice again, "And remember not to intervene. Your cover is the most important thing. Then he waved his hand a little to let the girl walk away, accompanied by the angel who had escorted her in the past.
The thought of facing a demon made her hair stand on end, but the need not to disappoint Hana weighed more heavily. What neither of them knew until much later was that this mission was only the beginning of another story, one that ends the war of all wars and that spoke of the epic love of an orphan who had been insignificant for a long time. Who would have thought that in the hands of an inexperienced angel hung not the fate of his small community, but that of all humanity.

¿Lo has entendido?— Arael asintió.
¿no respetas mi autoridad?
