The Ark | El Arca [Kyeran]

Kyeran had grown up knowing he was different from the rest of the community. His life had no been tainted by the disillusionment of a dying world. He didn't believe in evil, but in circumstance, and he had imagined a grand project in which human beings were reconciled with their origins. Nobody among the druids thought like him. Nobody. That was the first and last disagreement he had with them.

Those who had raised him and taught him the value of sharing, of healing, of rebuilding, were the first ones who had given up hope. What then did they hope to achieve? To isolate themselves in their closed environment and wait for the end without doing anything at all? It seemed completely insane to him. He could not conceive of such a reality. He had seen the goodness in those men and women and couldn't believe that there weren't other good people out there to whom he could give what the druids gave to him.

Reality was more implacable.

The cities were turbines, machines with gears covered with grease and pollution, where humans were small ants operating levers automatically. No one heard the sound of birds and the neon lights didn't let you see the stars. He often talked to anyone who gave him the opportunity, but the truth is that no one listened. And though his spirit flagged, his aim did not. As if an invisible hand guided his steps and gave him strength. There was something good to build and he would do it, even if he had to do it alone.

Plank by plank, nail by nail, he applied everything he had been taught to begin erecting his own shelter. He had found a house that had survived centuries of war and desertification in a corner of barren, lifeless land. Only one wall remained standing and it was full of washed-out graffiti, and rebuilding it was a challenge. The top floor caved in three times while trying to renovate it. It had no usable plumbing and the closest place to find some water was the stretch of toxic river that ran nearby. He learned to reuse everything and to live in solitude, something he had never had to experience before. And there he found that life still pulsed beneath his bare feet. He saw a condor flying over his nest, lightning crossing the horizon splitting a cactus in two, fish with slippery skin swimming among the garbage bags and tires. For even if no one thought of a tomorrow, life fought tooth and claw its way through even death.

Every time he went back to the city for supplies, he noticed how his throat stung, his eyes dried up and his skin became irritated. That place was toxic, but the whole planet had been crammed there as if it were the last board in the ocean, a place of death and hopelessness. And then he understood. They lived in the wrong place, where not even imagination could flourish.

If only they could see the whole picture... If only they could see all that remains... If only they could see the reasons to keep fighting...

"S-sorry..." Kyeran looked up at a huge man who had intercepted his path, "W-would you like to co-co-operate with a go-good cause?" His smile was genuine and taking the donation brochure in his hands, he believed once again in the kindness of a stranger.

"Of course."

🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧

No podía concebir esa realidad.
