What's to come in 2018.

Long post incoming, grab some coffee and get cozy.

First, living wage goal: minimum $500 a month, total of everything from your support to commissions. I save nothing. Everything will go to the home and supporting my parents.

A major milestone: I need a Cintiq. Badly.

Come March, I'm taking over the majority income-earner role. That means I need to do more, do faster. One of things I'd like to try is livestream 1-hour doodle commissions. Fast and silly things.

On average I spend 7 - 8hrs on stream coloring, if I can draw live, $10 a pop, I could nab $70 - $80. That'd be about 16% of goal. Once or twice a month and I take fewer full fledged commissions to round off everything.

I can draw on my Intuos but it takes too long to be viable. So. Much. Rotating. I've tested several times. On average, it'd take me 3 hours to reach just outlines for a single character, lightly detailed.

Content target #1: Strict adherence to quota

I've been running myself ragged trying to put stuff out, fighting against that guilty feeling I'm not doing enough. It's not good for my health so I gotta pace myself, at the rate of 1 art every $50 + 1 art backup, counting on an individiual piece basis (because I still have to factor in coloring, just inks is not attractive). So at my current support total, that'd be 3+1 pieces a month, rounded off will be 4+1.

Content target #2: More character sets / themed collections

I could give more bang for the buck by putting out more pieces per idea / subject. Once I'm familiar with a subject, why not maximise on it? In theory I should be faster and more efficient with each following piece. I could be so efficient I can top off the quota without too much trouble or build up an art pile in advance.

Content target #3: More fanarts

This is self-explanatory. That's what the bulk of big-time art Patreons usually do, or porn, but there's an intersection with fanart. I have a lot I want to try, just that commissions get in the way or if games, can't afford the consoles to play them on and relying on walkthroughs to come out later.

This is also where I may ask for some of your feedback, you may be more expert on something than I (as pointed out in my Reshiram/Zekrom piece, I got shit on a lil bit for my uninformed color choices)

Solid maybe, major consideration: More hardcore fansmut

The big seller, and also something I could go to jail for. I am desperate enough to consider this. I'm not an anonymous nickname anymore, so I can't hide.

I enjoy drawing the nasty. If I could get away with just pinups and nudes I would but it feels I'm hitting a plateau.

Patreon is the safest option to offer this as I'm not commercializing it, which is arguably the letter of the law. So long as I'm not running a pornsite or taking pornmissions I should still be in the clear. Here's where clean arts come into play to balance things out so I don't look like a total smuthound.

My other defense is furries.

Make no mistake, the law is active. A local guy was prosecuted specificly for this, but he had the odds stacked against him (human porn, muslim guy). Still, it's a risky chance for anyone.

(...Or at least, more dicks)

And that's my general outlook for this year. I'm already stressed, but then again, when am I not?

Huion and Yiynova's pen response is slower than frozen molasses.

This has been mentioned before on my FA. This brand does not exist here so I have to order from overseas. The shipping weight is 1lbs heavier than the Cintiq. Roughly calculation: $400 + $300 shipping + $100~ import taxes and agent fees = $800+. Add a little more and I can buy a Cintiq, from the local mall with good brand resale and product support.

Huion also makes a much cheaper alternative now that cintiq has lost exclusivity on certain copyrights.

Well it certainly sounds like you're gonna be a busy bee, I hope everything works out well for you! As far as the Cintiq goes though, can I perhaps offer an alternative? I've used a Cintiq for a few years now and I've currently been using a much cheaper but VERY similar alternative called the Artisul. The one I have is about the size of the cheapest Cintiq you can get, but it's S300-400 cheaper and it works just as well, if not better. I think there are larger sizes but the "small" one is about as big as a regular sketch pad and works very well for me to get a faster turnout on my own commissions/artwork. Just a suggestion from one artist to another, hopefully it helps. C:
