The Future of Modern Rogue
Added 2018-01-14 17:42:31 +0000 UTCHey Rogues! Jason here. Such a portentous title for a post, right? I'm sitting here planning out the next few months of the Modern Rogue and trying to determine what that looks like.
And since you guys are paying for this, I thought I should ask you!
What kinds of episodes do you want to see? You can be as specific as you like. Is there a certain topic we should tackle? Or would you like to see more of one of the 'three pillars' - Gentleman, Scoundrel, or Warrior?
Let me know! I'd love to hear any suggestions you have.
Thanks!
Jason

2018-02-08 16:57:20 +0000 UTCI just realized that in basically every action movie the hero ends up getting shot or stabbed at some point and has to patch himself up. Some emergency medical stuff would be great.
2018-02-01 02:30:23 +0000 UTCI really enjoy the technological videos (the emulator, deep web, etc.)

2018-01-23 15:24:51 +0000 UTCCan you elaborate on "screen caps?" Do you mean for the thumbnails for each episode? - Brandt H. (editor, cam op)
2018-01-22 05:03:10 +0000 UTCWhat "instragram filter" type thing are you using to get that warm feeling on the screen caps?
2018-01-20 18:14:50 +0000 UTCI think it's well within our purview, though. Good suggestion!
2018-01-19 15:22:11 +0000 UTCGrooming/clothing is a must. I'm prioritizing that.
2018-01-19 15:21:51 +0000 UTCAll of those are great. Your 'A-Team van' suggestion makes me wonder if you've already been using one to eavesdrop on us. ;)
2018-01-19 15:21:17 +0000 UTCA lot of good suggestions there. Adding them to the list.
2018-01-19 15:20:30 +0000 UTCYeah, strangely we haven't done a lot of prepper stuff. We do have one coming up, though!
2018-01-19 15:20:11 +0000 UTCGreat idea!!
2018-01-19 15:19:57 +0000 UTCBoxing is a big must.
2018-01-19 15:19:42 +0000 UTCThat one kind of worries me. All the more reason to do it.
2018-01-19 15:19:35 +0000 UTCYeah, that seems like the big winner out of all of the suggestions.
2018-01-19 15:19:19 +0000 UTCNo, it's a good suggestion and one that I'm starting to really look into.
2018-01-19 15:19:06 +0000 UTCDancing is one that's come up. And I'm definitely afraid of the dance floor.
2018-01-19 15:18:48 +0000 UTCThat's on the list. We could cover all of the common games and techniques.
2018-01-19 15:18:32 +0000 UTCInteresting! That's something I've never considered.
2018-01-19 15:18:16 +0000 UTCThe Faraday cage thing has come up a couple of times. I really need to look into that a bit more.
2018-01-19 15:18:02 +0000 UTCYes. Definitely. We've had some requests for episodes like that.
2018-01-19 15:17:34 +0000 UTCThat's actually really good. And gives us an excuse to get out of the warehouse! :)
2018-01-19 15:17:09 +0000 UTCGreat ideas. I'll look into that.
2018-01-19 15:16:48 +0000 UTCThe suit episode may be our single most requested episode.
2018-01-19 15:15:54 +0000 UTCYes! Definitely. We've had lots of requests for pick pocketing.
2018-01-19 15:15:26 +0000 UTCYeah, I think we're going to build a MAME cabinet at some point.
2018-01-19 15:15:05 +0000 UTCGreat suggestions! Let's hear your big one.
2018-01-19 15:14:47 +0000 UTCMore weapons training that's always fun to watch

2018-01-18 10:49:42 +0000 UTCBasic fine dining edicute is gentlemanish but maybe kind of boring.

2018-01-17 23:42:29 +0000 UTCI'd love to see more Gentleman Pillar, specifically grooming (how to choose a style, find and interact with a stylist) and dress (similar idea). Maybe more fitness tips as well. Perhaps there are other divorced 41-year-old dads out there looking for some gentlemanly help refreshing their look. A visit to Texas Hatters in Lockhart would also be be welcome.
2018-01-16 18:51:14 +0000 UTCI like the episodes where you teach how to make something. The gas mask, the newspaper baton, prison wine, nail darts. More of those. :)
Bert
2018-01-16 15:41:08 +0000 UTCSingular idea: In a classic A-TEAM style montage, remake a vehicle into a listening station or some geekery along those lines. More broadly: The most intriguing content you guys put out in my opinion revolves around navigating systems that are common in modern society (e.g. prison, digital/cyber security, deep web, utility graffiti, etc ). Social engineering would be compelling, but I mean more along the lines of understanding how a system works, hacking it, and maneuvering it efficiently.
2018-01-15 18:50:22 +0000 UTCI know it's been a long time coming but PVC archery, making DIY arrows, testing slings, Atl Atls.... That sort of stuff is really interesting and relatively cheap. But I do agree with some of the other rogues here, the gentleman pillar has been a favorite of mine. Dancing, hookah, suits, hidden blades, using clothes for self defense... Ya know... James Bond type stuff.
2018-01-15 17:45:07 +0000 UTCPreppers is an easy one. What about some technology assisted rogue-ness?
2018-01-15 09:38:25 +0000 UTCHave you done one on sports betting? I know a lot of people don't know what the point spread means, or the over/under, and maybe a quick "ONLY IF THIS IS LEGAL IN YOUR JURISDICTION" episode would fit the bill.

2018-01-15 06:12:08 +0000 UTCi wanna see yall do some boxing... that would be pretty cool.... and more alcohol studies
2018-01-15 04:51:18 +0000 UTCI want to see you guys try welding
R.M.E. Boots
2018-01-14 23:16:28 +0000 UTCGentalman pillar, How to have good manners, espuctually towards the ladies.
2018-01-14 23:14:00 +0000 UTCPersonally I am a bigger fan of the Gentleman pillar. There were good suggestions in the cigars episodes. (suits, coffee, etc)
2018-01-14 22:42:07 +0000 UTCI'd agree that the Gentleman pillar could use some additional fleshing out. Maybe there's a fun way to present even some one the more classically "boring" topics around fine dining and social protocols. Not my most golden piece of feedback ever, but happy to try and help refine that vague direction too.
2018-01-14 22:32:33 +0000 UTCAn episode or series with Bill Norris from Midnight Cowboy and the Alamo Drafthouse about tequilas would be cool. He's mad knowledgeable. And, believe it or not, dancing. The true Gentleman should not be afraid of the dance floor.
Andrew Hackard
2018-01-14 21:58:33 +0000 UTCI've seen Brian do all kinds of card tricks on Scam School, but could you do an episode just on normal card games like five card draw or blackjack and their strategies?
2018-01-14 21:54:59 +0000 UTCPinball Wizardry! There's a pinball manufacturer right in Austin, there's a very active international competitive scene, and there are plenty of pinball celebrities who'd be happy to do some ball skills training. A certain JuRY might also be keen to be involved.
2018-01-14 20:38:32 +0000 UTCI like a good mixture of the "Three Pillars". I generally subdivide stuff into "Spy Stuff"- being stuff like the dead drop spike, steganography, hacking, credit cards; "Gentleman Badass" Drinks, Krav Maga, Cigars, how to cook the perfect steak, that sort of thing. and then probably mind/body altering- Ganzfeld Effect, Taste Tripping, Pruno, Body Transfer Illusion. My personal favorite is the "Spy" category but I like a little of each. I have mentioned it multiple places but the biggest request I have is building and testing a Faraday Cage. They can shield things like cell phones and radios from EMP and they are actually pretty cheap to make, I've seen it be as simple as a cardboard box with heavy aluminum or complex as an lined ammo-can with multiple compartments. I also love it when you tie-in the sponsors with the theme and sponsors that are practical. I use Privacy.com ALLLL the time now, best sponsor ever. I also really enjoy when you mix in previous builds and ideas, like combining the lemon battery to power the taser, or using the salt supply gun to test the improvised body armor, it gives a sense that this is all cumulative. Love the show, can't wait until I can afford a higher Patreon Tier and to see the channel continue to grow and morph!
2018-01-14 20:18:07 +0000 UTCSince MR did an episode on the dark web using TOR, maybe show some common hacks and vulnerabilities using the tools in Kali Linux. The OWASP Broken Web Applications Project (<a href="https://www.owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Broken_Web_Applications_Project" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Broken_Web_Applications_Project</a>) could be used for the demonstration.
2018-01-14 19:38:35 +0000 UTCDid they do PVC bows, or was that a video I found on the sidebar after a MR episode? The DIY weaponry is always a blast.

2018-01-14 19:35:44 +0000 UTCI'm doing some traveling out of the country for the first time soon so I would be interested in possibly some general gentleman travel tips or maybe a whole ya could even do a whole series of "Gentleman Abroad" where you give some country specific tips on maybe some slang terms to keep you from looking like a fool. I do realize that it's unlikely you would have any of these videos before my trip but it's still something I think could be a good category ya can use for a lot of videos.
2018-01-14 19:21:29 +0000 UTCAnother SCOUNDREL thing that would be great to see would be something on throwing your voice and (although I am unsure of how to categorize it) something else I would love to see the Modern Rogues attempt is explaining how to manipulate fire, making different colored flames with metal, using wax shavings/dust to spread or enhance a flame. I thought that episode of how to powdered coffee creamer to make a flare was really great. I enjoy sometimes using ground cinnamon to make several small sparks and create a pleasant aroma while enjoying a good campfire.
2018-01-14 19:13:01 +0000 UTCSince you guys did bladed weapons, why not something along the lines of firearms and crossbows/bow and arrows other than mounted archery
2018-01-14 19:03:43 +0000 UTCWhenever I need to brainstorm for ideas, I like to break things down and make lists to analyze. We're all here because we love rogues. Like who? Why? What did they do that was so memorable? A few of my personal favorites: DB Cooper from history, Simon Templar a.k.a. The Saint, from literature, Setzer Gabbiani from Final Fantasy VI, and Chiana from Farscape. Is there any truth to the single-chop knock-out James Bond or Austin Powers can do, or Xena's or Spock's pressure point pinches? I've always loved thrown weapons. I remember throwing knives, cards, home made stars, and a whip, but did you ever do an episode on throwing darts? Blowguns, I remember, but nothing about the popular pub game. Still on games, how do you make fixed, loaded, or shaved dice? How effective are they at altering probability percentages? Is there a difference between "fixed" "loaded" and "shaved" like filling, casting, as opposed to reducing? I think I saw this somewhere on the reddit: how to buy a suit. Gentlemen warrior-scoundrels have to look the part. How to tie a neck or bow tie in different knots. That procedure and technique is probably an easy YouTube search, but it'll also probably leave out which to pair with what, and why. Maybe even some fundamentals on basic make-up from your experiences in front of the camera, on stage, in front of lights, or just for the most subtle peacocking.
2018-01-14 19:01:58 +0000 UTCI'd like to see more SCOUNDREL episodes of Modern Rogue. I think that an episode on pick pocketing would be really something (including its opposite planting objects on people) and perhaps something that demonstrates how to use slight of hand or concealment techniques to move objects from one location to another without being detected... just for fun of course, lol. Perhaps there could be an episode on basic grifting practices?
2018-01-14 19:01:44 +0000 UTCYou guys covered Retro Pie in a previous episode.Maybe revisit that topic with old arcade games and MAME in a future episode.
David Pick
2018-01-14 18:47:42 +0000 UTCI'd like an episode where The Modern Rogue brand gets a bit more defined. I not too recently heard Brian say on Weird Things that he wants MR to be a lifestyle brand but I don't currently see it as such, more a collection of semi random cool to have skill bits. For example, we learned about dead drops but did we really have any episodes teaching the basic sleight of hand and distraction techniques that make planning a dead drop an invisible event? We've got a ton of ways to get folks a lil tipsy, but do we have any episodes about persuasion techniques to help folks settle down if they've had one too many? Obviously I agree with folks saying we need episodes making the pillar skills more rounded, but I'd like to suggest taking it one step further to an episode or more making the vision all cohesive. Also, I have a big suggestion that gets a bit business heavy in spots but is ultimately meant to make the Modern Rogue more enjoyable for folks, should I suggest here or in private?

2018-01-14 18:36:39 +0000 UTCThese are all fantastic ideas!
2018-01-14 18:27:51 +0000 UTCDefinitely. The build episodes are always fun.
2018-01-14 18:27:26 +0000 UTCWe've always wanted to do something like this. I think it's time . . .
2018-01-14 18:27:19 +0000 UTCHmmm. Any suggestions?
2018-01-14 18:26:46 +0000 UTCThat's a good idea. Change up the standard Trever formula a bit.
2018-01-14 18:26:40 +0000 UTCLike a few others have said, I think the Gentleman pillar needs more love and variety. Make your own soap or cologne or beard oil. Sewing skills like repairing a button. Other ways of tying ties, tying a bow tie, folding a pocket square. Deciphering clothing laundry symbols or how to iron. Shining shoes. How to do common household repairs.
2018-01-14 18:24:24 +0000 UTCI would like to see more things like the taser from the camera
2018-01-14 18:18:10 +0000 UTCI'd like to see a some more Gentleman episodes, but really more where the skills are combined. Have someone set a challenge for the guys (such as survive a formal gathering). One prepares the room previously by making/hiding tools for the other and sets the specific challenges. For example, the other needs to mix drinks that would impress Trevor, talk cigars/whiskey without being called out on their lack of knowledge, find and collect the tools (such as a lockpick or hidden weapon) without being caught. This sort of format could be reused as well, as both guys could do it and it could act as a review and capstone of your previous adventures.
2018-01-14 18:06:23 +0000 UTCI'd like to see you guys do more with music
2018-01-14 18:04:00 +0000 UTCI don't know if your willing to do this but going to a state where marijuana is legal and talk with a expert about it and different kinds of them should be interesting. And seeing you high ofc.
2018-01-14 18:03:08 +0000 UTCI kinda want to see you guys challenge yourselves, like having Trevor show you how to make a certain drink and see who can remember it and make the best ones with a added twist from both competitors. And Trevor decides which ones are best. This way we can also get a understanding of your mistakes if someone else gets to attempt it and makes the same mistakes. And it doesn't have to be limited to just drink making it could be a whole challenge segment to the show for whatever seems fit.
TheInternetLord
2018-01-14 18:01:23 +0000 UTCWould also be funny to see you and Brian try larping.
2018-01-14 17:57:33 +0000 UTCInteresting. Okay. I like where this is going. Thanks!
2018-01-14 17:55:38 +0000 UTCYes go to a tailor!
2018-01-14 17:55:32 +0000 UTCSuch as? I know those are usually pretty booze heavy. I'd like to get a broader variety.
2018-01-14 17:55:16 +0000 UTCHey Jason, I loved the cigars episode but would really enjoy one on Pipe Tobacco as well. And with all the booze episodes I think a good Gin show would fit in nicely as well. And just for giggles why not have an episode on bespoke suits?
CastironWhisky
2018-01-14 17:49:31 +0000 UTCI would like to see episodes that tie skills together. Like how to throw a dinner party. I can now mix cocktails, pick beers and grill a steak, how do I put it all together to impress people.
