Can a Potato Cannon Kill You?

Hello you beautiful life-changing Rogues! Brian Brushwood here.

Today we're trying something new, and as our bosses, we'd really like your feedback:

The Modern Rogue is doing just fantastic on our content these days. Feedback on the articles has been great, and the episodes seem to  be getting better and better. We're looking to increase the amount of content we bring you per week, and in order to do that we've recognized that we have to make it as easy as possible for our champions (that's you guys) to share our adventures with your friends.

Today we're experimenting with releasing a 90-second teaser in addition to the full episode. The idea is that the teaser can get our fans excited for the full release, and at the same time be the kind of "highlight" content that is easy to share on twitter, reddit, facebook, etc.

We haven't yet figured out how far apart the two videos should be posted, so here's where we need your feedback. Today, we're posting the teaser early in the day, which will include a link to the unlisted video of the full episode, and then the full episode later this afternoon. We're hoping this means the fans can get psyched and then click through to the episode, but if you're hungry for the full episode immediately, you can jump right to it at youtu.be/ME7U5XFzrZU

So here are the two questions I have for you:

Even if you don't dig this idea, can't wait to hear your thoughts, and as always:  thanks for everything you continue to do to help us grow The Modern Rogue.  You guys really are the heart of our operation, and we love you for it.

What they said ^^^^^

I definitely agree with everyone saying it should be shorter, and I also agree that it should probably be released either with, or very close to the full episode. Maybe it's just me, but I've lost count of how many times I'll see a trailer for something and go "I should watch that when it comes out!" only to completely forget that it exists.

Teaser is a great idea, but shoot for 15-30 seconds. You want to capture those with a short attention span, but leave them enough reason to watch the full video. And keep to a simple format for editing sake. I'll use life cast as an example: 1. Episode summary ("We're going to make a copy of Jason's head") 2. Process (painting on silicone) 3. Process (applying plaster) 4. Humor ("MIRROR!") 5. Result (completed mold) 6. Call to action (Click to watch the full video) Try and limit how much of the good stuff you put in the teaser. Like show the potato gun being fired into the head and picking out a chunk of potato, but try to save different angles and slo-mo for the full vid. I think the full video should always be available from the end of the teaser. You should also watermark "The Modern Rogue" into the video so if someone GIF's part of the teaser others know how to find you.

Just my 2 Zimbabwe cents, which is worth nothing. I wouldn't send just a teaser unless my buddies could watch the full thing right away if they wanted. They don't have patience. :) I send links to the full episode so they can enjoy it right away. BUT, if the teaser is a quick summary of the episode with the recipes and the result then that is shareable with my short-attention-span friends. So, #1 yes, my friend Dan would like some of your episodes and I have shared some with him and others before. #2 I would prefer simultaneous release because of my short-attention-span friends won't remember to go back and watch the full episode.

I think it's an interesting idea, but maybe too long? I think you guys should push for more sharable gif style highlights so it can be easily shared on social media. Once a new viewer is watching the videos are compelling enough, you just need that quick hook. A teaser that can be viewed quickly as a hook embedded in social media posts can be short enough for the viewer to see the show's general premise and then follow a link to the full video. As for frequency, I think it depends on episode. While I love the show, there are some episodes that just don't have any "WOW!!!" moments. Pick the most surprising/exciting episodes to highlight. For example, the live casting episodes would be a bad choice. Most of those were personality based, which is great for fans, but not too great for hooking new viewers.

I like the idea of a teaser video! It gives YouTube viewers a chance to consider what might be coming. I agree with the continued increase in the quality of content and think this will really entice people to subscribe and keep coming back for the next video. I also really appreciate the link to the full episode in the description... Obviously I'm already subbed and don't really care about a preview. I just want to see the full episode. As far as timing goes, I'd recommend a consistent schedule 24 hours apart maybe? (Just spitballin here) so if you release the teaser at 9am PST on Monday, release the full video on Tuesday at 9am PST.
