This is a pretty exciting one. I know, I was there. It was legitimately shocking and mildly scary. And Jason's pants got damaged.
In the moment, I think I was feeling exactly what Brian was feeling about Jason's Thor-like approach to the situation, but, given some hindsight, and a lot of research, I have to say that I don't consider his actions to be nearly as dangerous as I previously thought. After watching dozens of youtube videos of people doing absolutely insane things to heated ferrocerium rods, I'm convinced that the reaction we got was a very unlikely anomaly that would be really difficult to replicate.
I've seen people literally hit a large heated ferrocerium rod with a sledge hammer, and not get even half the reaction we did. Modern Rogue exclusive! (I guess)
Not that I'm encouraging that sort of behavior; playing with combustible substances in unintended ways creates unpredictable consequences, and you need to have a cautious approach to those circumstances. But I don't think there is as much of a safety lesson to be learned from this episode as I thought that day.
