To quote my father, who was a Green Beret in Vietnam toward the end, the only really essential EDC item is a good pocketknife, "because you never know when you might need to carve out an empire." Personally I rock a Benchmade Osbourne most of the time, but occasionally a Schrade Old Timer or Victortoinox Recruit Swiss Army Knife if the mood strikes me. Sometimes both the Benchmade and the SAK, if I'm knowingly going out into the wilderness. I have eight and a half knives (the half is a box cutter) within reach of my desk. Usually I only take one of=r two with me when I go out, but they're available.
