khōréō is now accepting submissions of short speculative fiction for its next reading period, which runs from 1 July to 31 July 2025. The magazine is dedicated to publishing stories by immigrant and diaspora authors and artists. Eligible contributors include (but are not limited to) first- and second-generation immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented migrants, individuals displaced by colonialism or imperialism, and anyone whose heritage is shaped by movement, erasure, or the interplay between “here and elsewhere.” BIPOC creators who identify with these experiences are especially encouraged to submit.
WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR:
Speculative fiction stories under 5,000 words
Strong preference for stories under 3,500 words
Stories that explore the unfamiliar, the uncanny, the possible, and the profound—across fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and other speculative genres
One flash fiction (≤1,500 words) and one short story (1,501–5,000 words) submission allowed per author per cycle
Shunn Modern Manuscript format is required
WHAT THEY OFFER:
Payment at SFWA pro rates: $0.10 per word
WHO SHOULD NOT SUBMIT:
Writers who do not identify as part of an immigrant or diaspora community
Writers submitting AI-generated work, reprints, or stories over 5,000 words
Writers submitting multiple stories in the same category or resubmitting previously rejected work in the same cycle
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Previous contributors must wait one year after their published issue before submitting again
Stories with gratuitous violence, fridging, harmful stereotypes, or “it was all a dream” endings will not be considered
Content warnings and a brief author bio are encouraged in the cover letter
Submissions are only accepted through their Moksha portal
