Job Title: Freelance Data Journalist – Crime Stats & Paranormal Sightings
We’re looking for a part-time data journalist to help us dig up, wrangle, and present strange and compelling stories hiding in plain sight — specifically in crime statistics and paranormal data. You’ll write two data-rich, long-form articles per month that help anchor our editorial authority and drive backlinks through sheer informational dominance.
Think: skyscraper content on crack — but with serial killers, Bigfoot, and FBI crime reports.
To apply, please send your resume, cover letter, and a relevant portfolio to editorial@obscurix.com
SCOPE OF WORK
2 articles per month, each ranging from 2,000–3,500 words
Articles will focus on either:
Crime data (e.g. robbery or car theft statistics by state, historical crime trends, unsolved cases by region)
Paranormal data (e.g. alien sightings by state, Bigfoot sightings through history, haunted location clusters)
You’ll compile and synthesize data from the best available sources, including:
Government crime reports (FBI, state-level)
Research databases
Credible news outlets
Crowdsourced or UGC data (when well-sourced)
Our editor will polish the final copy, and our team will handle visualizations — your focus is storytelling with clean, compelling data.
DELIVERABLES
One longform data-driven article every 2 weeks
Strong, reputable sourcing throughout
Minimal editing required (clean grammar, organized flow)
Occasional light analysis of news/social posts for paranormal topics
RATE
$200 per article (every 2 weeks)
Steady long-term potential if quality is high
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Background in data journalism or strong investigative journalism with data experience
Familiarity with sourcing and interpreting public data sets
Passion for our editorial domains: True Crime, Paranormal, Dark History, and the Strange
Obsessed with crafting content that outperforms the competition — not just filling a brief
Based in the U.S.
BONUS IF YOU:
Know how to wrangle CSVs, pivot tables, or scrape structured data
Have examples of previous data-backed reporting
Are low-maintenance, deadline-reliable, and cool with weird editorial ideas
To apply, please send your resume, cover letter, and a relevant portfolio to editorial@obscurix.com
