Post your Week 2 Lament Bass Submissions HERE

If you'd like me to review your piece, please submit it by Sunday morning (April 13th). The goal this week is to write a lament bass in the minor key. I'm providing two examples of my own; when you submit your piece, please also provide some basic info like I'm showing below! Also make sure that if you upload your music to something like google drive that you set the permissions to global so that anyone can access it.

1: Neoclassical in Am

This is a loop in Am using the following lament bass:

A --> G# --> G --> F --> E

I harmonize that with the following chords:

Am ( i ) - - E/G# ( V63 ) - - G ( bVII )- - G6 - -

F ( bV ) - - Dm/F ( iv64 ) - - Esus4 ( Vsus4 ) - - E ( V ) - -

I play lead using the Am scale on top of most chords, but for the E chord and the E/G#, I move into harmonic minor to highlight that G#.

2: Andalusian Cadence in Bm

This is a fingerpicked loop using the following bass line:

B --> A --> G --> F#

I use the following chords:

Bm ( i ) A (bVII) G (bVI) Bm/F# (i64) F# (V)

The Bm and A chord are played with sus2 variations, and the G chord is heard with an added 9th. The cadence at the end from i64 -> V - i is a minor version of what's called a "cadential 64" and in my opinion always has a classical era vibe to it.

Hi Jake, sorry for the late submission but I work a swing shift and so it makes it hard to come up with and post. Please note that I have an echo on several tracks so the chord transitions aren't always very clear. Anyway, MP3 here:https://soundcloud.com/user-834279913-494217831/dalli?si=4b950163a4bd4180954e1a4d73471050 Key: F#m arpeggio: C#m/F# F#m -> E -> Dadd9-> C#madd9 arpeggio: C#m/F# F#m7 -> F#m -> E -> Dadd9 -> C#madd9 arpeggio: C#m/F# F#m7 -> F#m -> E -> Dadd9 -> C#madd9 Stabs: F#m -> F#m Pre-Coda(?) Here's my submission! I'm sorry it's late. I know it desperately needs a lead/melody over it, and that was my plan, but we had a death in the family. I had some cool outlining arpeggios in mind, but I wasn't able to get them up to speed in time. I have one guitar arpeggiating the chords and another holding the full chords. This tune is in B minor in 6/8. The chords are as follows: Bm-A6-Gmaj7-F# x 2 Bm-F#/A#-A6-Gmaj7-F#sus4-F# x 2 Like I said, I know it needs a melody, but hopefully it at least hits the prompt. I look forward to listening to everyone else's! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kGDMZQRbUm6cwqBSZlMusrskfqy0Ppy1/view?usp=sharing

Since I missed out on last week's Major Lament I decided to use a Major Lament and a Minor Lament in this week's piece. Does it work? You be the judge. :). I needed a little more time for the major portion melody but I like the whole vibe of the track. Back to ideas for my punk rock side project this week. This is a part of a song about being left behind by a loved one in a zombie apocalypse. There’s some production elements I need to work out but here’s where I’m at with it at the moment: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/7xgaumxyfoed6es6ps7n7/Lament-Bass-Week-2.mp3?rlkey=kteso9ddynyi49ilz36bfb57o&st=mb8tvnmu&dl=0 [Guitar intro 6 bars] Verse (lament bass) Am | - | Am | - | G | F - E x2 Chorus C | G | Am - G/B | C - Em C | G | Am | Am | Am | Am Lyrics: “Runner Up” Fighting my way through the crowd Calling your name but you’re not here The screaming’s so loud Thoughts aren’t so easy now My mind doesn’t work like it used to Before they took me When they came for us There was nothing I could do When they came for us I couldn’t run as fast as you I couldn’t run as fast as you
