Patreon Only - Writing a melodic line over chords

Better late than never- This is a response to David Kaufmann's question on how I would approach writing a solo over a set of chords. The chords are very simple but it's a unique and wonderful little progression, with an interesting modulation. It could be a real struggle to write a lead over but hopefully this video shows you all a way to simply approach these sorts of challenges, and gives you a starting point for this specific set of chords.

Very excited for my Lydian video, the music is turning out to my liking and there will be a lot of nutty and weird composition stuff going on in that one. Stay tuned!

Awesome, glad you found those helpful! Eventually I'll turn them all into a highly condensed Signals video or series.

Great video and lesson. I love the whole melodic series. Having it brought up in the livestream last night made me "rabbit hole" the whole set.

Absolutely, it's a note that's shared between both parts of the song. To me it doesn't feel like a note worth "highlighting" though, since it's present in the C#m, the A, the Bsus4, and the C. However- you could make a whole new melodic phrase out of this concept. Constantly tagging the E over each chord, while trying out new chord tones underneath. Might sound pretty cool!

Thanks Jake! Very useful info!

Nice. One thing that came to mind is the sus4 of B is the 3rd of C, i.e. E. That could also be part of a melodic pathway of the key change, no?
