Any thoughts or theories as to why Ionian and Aeolian became by far the most popular modes in western music?

Paul Callaway

Jake has talked about these before, and you may be able to track down his videos on "Slash Chords" (as in C/E, which is a C chord with E (the third degree of the chord) in the bass, or played on the bottom. I'm sure Jake can cover this, no problem. :D

Hi Jake, I was reading some music theory and came across this concept of "six-four" chords. I am not sure if this applies to guitar, but it was in the context of a Beatles song (Rain) so I assume so. What are these chords and how are they employed? I was googling them and found a reference to different types of 6/4 chords (Pedal, Cadential and Passing) but it was quite confusing. I was hoping you could explain what these chords are and their function if possible. Thanks!
