Any thoughts or theories as to why Ionian and Aeolian became by far the most popular modes in western music?

2021-05-10 21:28:40 +0000 UTCHi Jake, I was reading some music theory and came across this concept of "six-four" chords. I am not sure if this applies to guitar, but it was in the context of a Beatles song (Rain) so I assume so. What are these chords and how are they employed? I was googling them and found a reference to different types of 6/4 chords (Pedal, Cadential and Passing) but it was quite confusing. I was hoping you could explain what these chords are and their function if possible. Thanks!
