Studio Walkthrough

Firstly - this video contains an ad for Synology. They upgraded my NAS in exchange for me making a video for Instagram Stories about how I use it.

Because some of you might find it interesting, and because Instagram Stories are fleeting, we've uploaded it here. If you've got questions about the studio setups then ask away and we'll try and answer them!

Update: We've replaced the link to the video as people had issues watching through the previous link.

I saw that 3D printer. What if you did some type of V60 3D print or maybe even a dosing cup

Casey Bennett

This made my day, thank you!

Rikard Aronsen

The book launch outtakes video has also been updated, sorry about this!

James Hoffmann

Switched the source so it should be corrected now, sorry about that!

James Hoffmann

I have the same issue as Rasmus, was there a time limit for these Vimeo-videos? I have the same issue with the Book promo outtakes.

Rikard Aronsen

This video should be open for me but says it's on private in vimeo

Rasmus Kockgård

Super, super interesting - thank you!!

Richard Emerson

Thanks for the tip!

Galen Carol

Freezing sealed coffee is perfectly fine. How you thaw it out matters though. Ideally, take the sealed bag out and and let it sit at room temp for a few hours to prevent excess condensation (from the room) and it’ll be fine.

Jason

As far as I know, freezing the coffee in an airtight container drastically slows down the oxidation process. I do it myself when I like a coffee a lot and want to buy a 1kg bag without some of it going stale.

Danny Maksoud

Freezing coffee? I was told (by several roasters) that it was a bad idea. I guess it's not or you wouldn't be doing it. Maybe you could elaborate.

Galen Carol

Have you tried opening in a browser instead of the Vimeo app?

Piero Tintori

Really loved this video, great idea to share it

Piero Tintori

Would love to know more about the lighting you use!

Stuart Whiley

everybody liked that

Paul Kundt

I have the same rug from Ikea!

Zach Berger

Aw yis, very like.

Dalibor Bauernfrajnd

"A man knows even his hair tools." Isn't it obvious?

Väinö Forss

Loved this! And what a camera set up too! As a tech person, it's really cool to see James knows his stuff on tech but doesn't throw folks into the deep end with it.

Brett Wilkins

This was awesome! Great to see your set-up and hardware.

Cryss Foster

With the sets being basically created for you, why haven't you adjusted them for a more ergonomic height? The Desk set is adjustable well proportionally, thanks to the legs, but the Kitchen set seems uncomfortably low for your height. Also how did you find your studio for this, and what led you to choosing this, even though it has a somewhat low door height for your you. All this crouching and hunching cannot be good for your back

Matthew Hang

Am I the only one who can not play a video?

Aljoša

Hello! As a screenwriter I’d love to know how you work on your scripts, from conceptualizing the idea to shooting. Thanks!

Pau Roigé Gargallo

that was my exact thoughts. James and the crew doing magic as usual <3

Alexandr Patrasco

That was super cool to see, thank you! I must admit, the set looks completely different that what I had imagined as a "wide open space" with lots of natural light... Just goes to show that with great cameras and good lighting, you can make it look much "grander" than it really is!

Paul

Love this! Thank you for sharing, James!

Yash Khemani

Peek "behind the curtain" - yay! How fun! I feel privileged to be in on the secret that, as fellow fan, Jeff C. has expressed, we really haven't been inside your flat all this time!

Deborah Walker

Brian, you and me both!

Jeff Cerreto

And so the scales have fallen from my eyes. I mean, I kind of always knew it wasn't your home dining room/kitchen/etc but I didn't want to believe it. It always felt so personal to watch your videos as you show us something new. Nevertheless, I thank you for sharing!

Jeff Cerreto

Editing on a trackpad… how’s your carpal tunnel?

David Schlaepfer

Ah would love to see this! Except, then I might buy one...

Michael Ball

Love this! Yes, more behind the scenes is always fun! What happened to the kitchen set with the black countertops? That seems a little larger than your current set? It could be fun to do a BTS video about everyones coffee preferences throughout the work day, too. What tools do you each gravitate towards? I have to say, I am a huge fan of Z-Cam's too. I use one for my webcam+zoom teaching setup (with the 18-35mm) and it is great. Also use my Synology a ton for backups mostly since most of my data is still photography. They're great! Strongly considering a second one for off site stuff. I would be curious to do a deeper dive on 10gbe and editing, mostly since I'm thinking about upgrading for partially that reason when i work in Final Cut...but that's very niche. :) Oh and when are we going to see a review of the E1 Prima. I don't care if it was comped or a long term loan, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Michael Ball

Nice: clever to make this video in portrait mode for reels / stories playback on a phone.

വിനോ (Vino)

Excellent, so good to see this. I would definitely be using Z-cam if I didn’t rely so heavily on autofocus!

James Harvey

Great mic but really not appropriate for this application, they require so much gain and have to be basically touching the subjects lips. Definitely prefer not to see the mic on set

James Harvey

Have you tried the sm7b microphones? Or was it those that captured the echo? :-)

Eyeolair

Will not play is anybody else having that problem??

David Newberry

Super fun to see! The sets always feel very spacious in the finished videos; the reality of how small they actually are (in particular how low the ceilings are) is really interesting.

Lukas Myhan

They were cheap from IKEA when I first moved into a studio space.

James Hoffmann

There's probably a siphon or two in here. Yes, they're on the list!

James Hoffmann

The bigger they are the harder the sound is to control!

James Hoffmann

I think Mario Kart is always going to be easy favourite

James Hoffmann

Updating any chance I get!

James Hoffmann

The carpet though?!

Matt Bithell

Wow. Bubble bursted. I always thought the "studio" was a room in your house. I was wondering how you had a house so condusive to all things coffee. The setup of the bar and all. Even the way you set up your knick knacks like your 70s pour over kit. Well done in making it home-y enough to confuse the newb.

Brian Wingfield

Thank you, that was very interesting! I guess that this is yet another case where expertise and hard work make things *look* effortless.

toby cabot

Fortunately they make that easy to do, and if it’s not exposed to the wider internet that also makes things safer. Be careful with QuickConnect though.

fluffy

I’ve been a huge fan of Synology for years. For my meager needs even the 1Gb ethernet is enough for live editing off the NAS, although I’m not shooting in 6K+ either. Really cool to learn what cameras and other gear you use, I’ve been wondering.

fluffy

In addition to being a coffee nerd, I am also a camera nerd (so this was a really cool video)! I did notice a Coffee Syphon on your shelf. Any chance you will be doing a video on Coffee Syphons?

Clegg

Ah yes…how James’ Sausage is made. Beautiful.

Al Harris

Hey James remember to update and patch that synology box they have a ton of security vulnerabilities, so make sure to fully update it.

Jordfaar

Thanks for that! I'm quite surprised at the smaller studio sizes than what appears in the videos. I love that you're also nerdy with filming.

Howie Nordström

"This is going to get a little bit nerdy" Well, why else would I be here if not for that?

mclardass

What is everyone's favorite N64 game around the studio? And why exactly does the studio have an N64?

Pretty Dece

That was a pretty cool video. Thanks James.

Robert Lynn

Great stuff that!

MihaSP

What an absolute treat! Thanks, James!

Mark Wood

Thank you for the great video. Makes one appreciate the production more. Like the carpets selection

AlawiTaher

Thanks for sharing, really interesting to see the setup and how you do, some of what you do.

Chris Montague

Depends on who you're watching there are a lot of youtubers with amazing production quality

Eddie Choa

Is there like one window in this studio? Are they just covered up? Do you film in a bunker? And why mushrooms? I have so many questions

Jochen Paul

Important cameo from the Denman brush, the secret MVP tool of the entire operation.

James Sherrard

Tech nerdy James is the crossover we needed!

Wojciech Bugno

It is!

James Hoffmann

Excellent view into your setup. Would love to see a similar view of the spaces you use at Square Mile.

Sean O'Keeffe

James, this is a super helpful video! Please continue to share more behind the scenes content! Especially on your lighting. Also, how is your Mac Mini M1 configured?

Doug Piper

Excuse me, is that a Denman brush on your desk? A man knows even his hair tools. :D

Grace B

Interesting video. It’s a pity other video makers don’t go to the amount of care you do.

Richard Herbert

Thank youfor the tour. I never seen such a clean and net fridge!

Vincent

Really interesting, thanks for sharing this. Good to meet more of the team!

Corey Mantuano

As a big media nerd I loved all of this, I'm aware of the quality of your videos and always say it to my partner, your edits are very smooth and your assets look professional so it was nice to see what you're using.

Gavin Tones

I can't be the only one who is *shocked* by how small the sets actually are vs how they appear on camera. The lighting makes them seem so much bigger - bravo!

Sebastian Frost

Amazing to see how the set looks like! It's a lot more then I imagined, all the gear, sound blankets! It shows much work you put in the channel. Thank you James!

Krzysztof Bucikiewicz

I don't have a freezer full of coffee... I DON'T KNOW WHO I AM! SEND HELP?!

Djoran Keil

This is amazing, thank you for sharing.

Andrew Greening

Really cool, love the attention to detail - thanks for the tour!

Andrew Beveridge

Thanks for posting this for us coffee / tech nerds. Lots of my friends share this combination.
