I just use a basic CDN scale that does weight and has a timer. Use it for pour over, weighing coffee beans for single dose grinding, timing espresso shots, and checking espresso ratio every so often. Nothing fancy going on here 😄

Thanks for doing this James, I believe the kettle video also needs updaing since so many have taken inspiration from the Stagg The scales I'd recommend 1. Acaia Series (Lunar, Pearl, Pearl S) 2. Varia Aku, Aku Pro, Aku Mini 3. Decent is launching their Half Decent Scale, It's in beta but John can get you one 4. Fellow Tally 5. Normcore 6. Hario 7. Timemore Black Mirror 8. Bookoo As you evaluate these scales it would be great to compare how they fare on integration. The Acaia scales are awesome but the company doesn't open the source for integration and folks at decent have to workaround a lot of stuff to make sure it works with the app. There are a lot of interesting insights on decent diaspora as they are developing the half decent scales. People think Acaia is expensive for the heck of it but the BOM to get to the same quality as the Lunar adds up.

This is my go to scale for pourover. It's slightly to big for my espresso machine. It's under $30. It's Bluetooth, the app is great. It's by far the best no name scale on the market. I have a bookoo scale for espresso but I like this one more. I'm buying a new espresso machine and whether this scale fits is going to be one of the factors. When I bought it, it was on Amazon and it was under $20. But it looks like they are sold out on Amazon. Also rechargeable and great for travelling. Packaging was sublime and it’s my go to now plus is very affordable. I was in the market for a new scale a couple years ago (my kitchen scale of 10yrs bit the dust) and landed on the Timemore Black Mirror Basic 2. I'm really pleased with it, though my needs are quite simple as I just brew with a V60. Wasn't too interested in the flow rate stuff in newer models so I skipped that. I definitely didn't want any smartphone functionality as that stuff will have an EOL long before the scale itself stops working.

My coffee scales broke and I just picked up some cheap soehnle 0.1g precision scales for some 10 or 15 euros in the supermarket with intention to get something better after research. So far 4 years later I'm still using those, although i tried a couple of coffee scales (one broke) another got sent back. My point is that when researching, reviewing we all tend to overdo with criticisms and search for perfection. But imho it's very important to highlight- which ones of them "just work" for the price that does not break the bank. Because I believe that 200euro is the price some pay for the grinder or even the whole setup and while important to have an use, scales only make a small impact on the workflow, and zero on the coffee taste. And sometimes simplicity just shines- because who like the scales which take seconds to power on and how many people actually use an app every time they brew. IMHO it would be great if you included some simple inexpensive solutions too

For espresso I am using the scale from eureka. Not the faster in terms of showing the exact weight but small enough to fit under the Linea Micra. Four pour overs I am using the first gen Acaia pearl. Works like on the first day 👍🏼

I appreciate that those who make espresso need a scale that is small/thin enough to fit the scale and a cup under the group head. For pour-over folks, however, absolute size may be less critical. So it may be helpful to test/compare two subcategories of scales, one subcategory strictly for the needs of espresso makers, and a second subcategory for pour-over folks. Further, for the pour-over category, I would be especially interested in scales that have a weighing range that could allow its use for other kitchen weighing needs, say a range up to 1-2+/- kg.

I'm still using my original Hario scales for pourovers and haven't really seen a compelling reason to upgrade. I was even using them for espresso though it was a tight fit under the portafilter. I recently bought some cheapies off Amazon for travelling, brand is OBest if that means anything. They seem fine but I gather longevity is an issue for these cheap scales so we'll see how they go. They fit better under my portafilter so will probably do espresso duty at home.

I have the “Timemore black mini” (not nano) which I am very happy with and bought at aliexpress for $40. It is only 16mm high but has enough width and depth to be used for both espresso and pour over. It is responsive, has flow rate, timers and fancy features like auto-timers, etc. No enshittification (no app, no bluetooth, etc.).

This is very timely! I am on my 3rd scale in under a year. I'm trying the Normcore Pocket V3, which I like so far. I also liked the ZeroHero Mini, but it wouldn't accept a charge when the battery died, so that made me gun-shy about getting another one. This is a common problem in the 1-star reviews on lots of scales. I don't mind spending money on a scale, but even the $100 scales have a lot of bad reviews. Why are good scales so hard?

I actually enjoy the process of using my phone to track my shots. I have the Decent scales and I really like them. They are cheaper than the other expensive bluetooth scales but they do have have some issues - their scale (couldn't help the pun) is a bit large, the touch buttons are annoying, and the display is difficult to see from where you would be standing to use them. But functionally they are great.

Salta kitchen scales i use for pourover, and a no-brand pocket jewellers scale for weighing coffee (Salta scale has +/- 2g accuracy, jewellers scale is +/- 0.02g accuracy). Works well for me, but cumbersome, since I need 2 scales to achieve 1 goal of making coffee!

I have the Hario V60 Drip Scale, and am not that happy with it. Issues that I'd like to see tested on alternatives: - turn on time is really slow in comparison to my regular kitchen scale - button 'presses' are finicky; the lack of tactile feedback and intermittent operation means it takes me a couple of attempts to start the timer or tare the scale.

I’d love to see you review the bookoo and maybe see if there is something similar that can be used for pour over. Any info on the persistent “weight loss” issue with the Timemore scales and any fixes would be useful. Also I’d love to see head to head testing between some of the Acaia scales and the weightman $10 scales that folks on the Hoffcord love. After Lance’s video, I am starting to think the Acaias are a whole lotta hype considering how cheaply made the innards are and I wonder whether they actually are any more accurate than the weightman. Your scales video is the right thing and the right time for this weird coffee person, so thanks James for this and all you do!

I bought a secondhand Acaia Pearl a while ago and enjoy the workflow so far. However, the TARA button is a bit frustrating… I’ve heard that the Timemore scales offer a great value-for-money. Bookoo scales are uprising as well. Though, Lance pointed out (today or yesterday, I think) that multiple people complained about unresponsive scales.

I have two scales, a Timemore Basic+ and a Varia Aku. They both gradually “gain” weight when i weigh beans, eg 24.0 g soon registers as if by magic say 24.5…24.6…etc. and the opposite with pourover water weight, say 50 g for a bloom eventually becomes 49.7…49.4…etc. What’s up with that?

I have 2 acaia lunars (older and newer models) and a small acaia pyxis (I think it was called). The latter is really cool and perfect for a traveling setup. It comes with its own little aluminium case which is fantastic. At home I do almost exclusively espresso and the lunars are suited perfectly for that. Travel I use a comandante, and delter press and the pyxis is a perfect accompaniment to those. I love that the lunars can weigh to 1/100th of a gram and that’s how I use them.

I prefer a scale that can be calibrated although having it be a bit easier than my TIMEMORE Basic 2.0 would be nice. Mine was off 2g at the low end out of the box.

I just do pour over and have a dirt cheap set of Edasion Coffee Scales off Amazon which only cost £10… batteries have last ages so far, but can sometimes reduce weight by 0.3g randomly while measuring out beans

This aliexpress scale is really affordable and is great at timing espresso as it starts the timer only after a certain extraction rate. I make pourovers, stovetop mokas and turkish coffee. We also want to be able to use the same scale to weight food ingredients, and postal packages. In our case there's not a size requirement for an espresso machine. We're very happy with the Sur la Table digital coffee scale (SKU 8598872). I love the acacia scales. Durable, strong and precise. But the price is just huge. It was the first scales I have bought and I don't regret it for a second. Recently I wanted to buy another one. But a smaller one and I was eye balling the acaia lunar. 230 euros 😝 But then... I stumbled upon this beauty. The Felicita. Small for under an espresso mug. Big enough for a portafilter (don't call it a piston guys, come on!) And... super fast! Please review it James. I really think it will be a winner. It is a serious Lunar "Killer" for this price. Only 160 euros.

I'll just second the people encouraging a look at the cheap AliExpress scales. I have a pair that cost I think 8€ delivered and it's tremendous. Definitely not an acai lunar but it has sent my two other kitchen scales to an early retirement and for the price I really can't complain. So a "haul" of the top x interesting ones on Ali would be super interesting.

About a year ago I purchased some 3kg/0.1g scales from Aliexpress for the extraordinary price of £5.80, including tax and delivery. I received them within a week. My expectations were low. I've had a few digital scales in my time, so I was expecting a slow read, an inaccurate read, poor battery life, and other annoyances. After using them for v60/clever for a year now, I'm really, really happy: - they are more than responsive enough (more so than my oxo scales) - my calibration weights confirm they're generally pretty accurate, but more importantly, they're sensitive enough to actually measure 0.1g increments, which is the important thing - there was a super annoying beep, but even though it didnt say in the instructions, if you hold both buttons down, it turns it off - the touch buttons work fine - the timer works fine - the battery lasts a long time and charges through usb-c it's definitely worth grabbing one or two of these cheap looking aliexpress scales. For that price, it's really really difficult to justify anything in triple digits.

I'm particularly interested in some of the super cheap mini scales that would fit under a classic Flair, and which you can find on Amazon or similar places. These might be under the brand name "SearchPean," "Maestri House," "Cafe Metric," or "Eravsow." They're in the $35usd range, and frequently seem to be the same basic scale branded and sold by multiple companies. Beyond that, I'd also be kind of interested in the MHW-3Bomber mini scale, but it seems a bit bigger. Mostly, I'm just curious about how usable these mini, extra cheap scales are these days for sometime like timing an espresso shot.

I use BEURER KS 36 scale since 2020. It’s a cheap(20-25€), low profile, and seemingly indestructible. It comes with a calibration weight. The local specialty bar uses one without a fault for 5 years now for espresso. But, it’s a spice scale by design, so no timer.
