BONUS VIDEOS: How Starbucks Accidentally Popularised The V60

Warning: This is a very long post (but chock-full of goodness!)

Contains: Extended Cut, Individual Cut Scenes, BTS photos.

This video originated as a talk I gave at the 2024 Madrid Coffee Festival. It seemed like a fun story to turn into a video, and relatively simple to make. We were wrong...

This project is, I suppose, a continuation of the documentary-type work we started with the first Tiramisu video. We learned a lot from that first effort, and even more from this follow-up. There's a third project in the works, and as it is a bit more ambitious, it is good for us to have had some experience before attempting it.

Quick note: We're making some merch with various mascots we had designed. (You've maybe seen me wearing the Aeropress one in a previous video). We're doing them as a limited run, where you can pre-order for 2 weeks if you want one of the Cone Brewer ones. We'll be releasing the others later, and if you're interested we can notify you when they go live if you put in your email. If you're a Cappuccino or Pourover Patreon member, don't forget to use your Patreon discount!

Back to the videos! To begin, let me explain the videos that are linked in this post:

There's the YouTube cut embedded above, which is freely available to anyone and I suppose what we think of as the ideal form for the video. However, there was quite a lot that we loved that didn't make it in. So that is available to you in a couple of different formats. The original plan was to also release this as long-form audio, like a podcast episode. We tried, but we just couldn't get it to work without it taking a lot more time and energy. Apologies!

Firstly, here's the full, extended cut (sorry, I can't embed these):

How Starbucks Accidentally Popularised the V60 (EXTENDED CUT)

If you haven't watched the YouTube cut yet, and you want the maximal experience, then watch this!

However, you may have already seen the YouTube cut, and so don't want to watch it all again just to see what you've missed out on, so here are individual cut scenes. (How we all miss DVD Extras....) They are here in the chronological order that they appear in in the extended cut.

Scene 1: The Wishlist. This provides a bit more background on how the idea for the Clover originated.

Scene 2: The Founding Of The Coffee Equipment Company (CEC).

Scene 3: The Squeegee. Look, I'm obsessed with the squeegee. Even typing the word brings me delight.

Scene 4 "I'm not thirsty any more." Cutting this scene killed me a little inside, I love everything about this story...

Scene 5: The Clover Wasn't Perfect. This was cut for time, but it is worth talking about the coffee that the brewer made and how we might judge it now.

Scene 6: Alternatives to the V60. We did try other things you know....

Scene 7: The Influential Monadnock Store

Scene 8: V60 Workflows. ABB. ALWAYS BE BREWING.

Scene 9: Starbucks and the Clover Rollout. What happened to the Clover once Starbucks had their hands on it? Why isn't it in every store?

Here are a few extra bits and pieces, because you're great and we appreciate your support in making projects like this possible!

A less spotted script..

Story time.

Remote 1 (Randy and Zander)

Remote 2 (Alistair)

This is Daisy's fault, but it made me laugh, so here it is.

Fascinating video! Thank you! I love coffee, and love learning how people start and build new inventions and new ventures, so this was doubly fun for me to watch. Also "How we all miss DVD Extras...." So glad you said that. I thought it was just me who sorely missed those DVD extras! Thanks for bringing them here :-D

Ann
