Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Jumping on Kicks (9 min)

My technique vlogs for patrons is me talking shop in the gym, sharing things that I'm working on as a fighter, often techniques or strategies I've learned from legends and krus when filming for the Muay Thai Library, and things I've learned in fights and through my 7 years of training in Thailand. I'm always working on improving myself, so this is my offer to you so you can try out the similar things.

This one is about stretching yourself. I've had a long history of being overly critical, and often very tight about my kick. I'm a small fighter and usually feel too far away, or as if my kick is going to be blocked. It's fair to say that the mid-kick is my least favorite weapon. But, I'm working on it. And one of the ways I recently began working on it is to force myself to jump on every kick in training. On the bag, in shadow, and if I can do it, on padwork and even in sparring. I'm not there yet, but it's already building my confidence and increasing the power of my kicks.

The idea behind this kind of training is to keep practicing the hardest part, and for me the hardest part is the moment of commitment. By jumping on every kick I kind of let go of the critical part because I know lots of these kicks are going to be messy. It also builds my trust in my balance, because I keep having to land from all my jumps, and it make me build trust in myself. Even though its a physical training exercise, it's really a mental training exercise. All the things that are improved in letting go and learning to trust yourself more, will help with your more grounded kicks. At least that I'm discovering.

You can see the original session where Arjan Surat, Coach of the Thai National Team, first taught me to jump on a kick, which I reference in the vlog above:
