Great way to sum it up Colin. Nintendo needs to realize that in actuality, Sony and MS have left the door wide open for them to leap frog them a bit with a powerful console. For the first time that I can think of, the two leading competitors in the console market have VERY similar architectures (XB1 and PS4 are basically PCs dressed in console clothing) so the big N could release a console that also has pretty standard PC components at its core, with maybe a slightly better GPU and BOOM - back to relevance. Developers wouldn't need to kill themselves to create specialized versions of the games if Nintendo took this track.
The other thing they should do is take on a partner (Google or Amazon) for their cloud infrastructure and online game play. I don't trust that Nintendo can build and maintain that on their own (Sony barely can) so why not find a way to lean on one of the established cloud players?
Bring their IP to this ecosystem and suddenly serious gamers will want a Nintendo console.

1000% agree with Colin. (And yes, I know how mathematically improbable that is.) INDIGO PROPHECY was another astounding Cube game, btw. And yes, they went wonky with the choice of carts for the N64. And those confusingly proprietarily WEIRD MINI-DISCS! I was excited about the Wii until I saw a launch model at a friend's house and, because I had bought my first PlayStation Console, realized what a TOY that console was.
However, two weeks ago I bought myself a WII U for XMAS. And here's the thing...I did it to escape the Eco-systems of shooters and get back into the Zelda realm. First download game? Wind Waker HD which I played to completion on the Cube.
I bought the latest Nintendo console so I could relive products from many years ago! I can't WAIT for the Metroid Prime Collection!!! But I understand what that means. It means I bought a new TV for Carol Burnett and The Andy Griffith Show....
How long can Nintendo continue this?!
I like my WII U but I am well aware of what's happening here.
