Paper Girls artwork is amazing! I can't believe I didn't say that. I absolutely love the covers and flat colors that were used!

I knew nothing of the story, characters or premise, but as an avid comic reader, I knew to trust in Brian K. Vaughn. Vaughn has jumped off the deep end with this series. Unlike Saga, who’s world is situated clearly in a DaDaist’s dreamscape, Paper Girls was cemented in reality… only to disrupt the reader with crazy time travel revelations over and over to dizzying effect. The first few issues were wacky, leading confused, under-developed, characters through weird scenarios while the reader is desperately grasping at anything to understand the rules of this world! Then… to my surprise, through the entire series, Vaughn pulled it off. He slowly added situations and characters for our paper-delivery quartet to bounce off of to tell a compelling story even inside this bizarre time-travel world. Although, I will say, after all those crazy adventures, the ending was very lackluster. • Recommendations: Eisner winner for best single issue: 2019 Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310, by Chip Zdarsky (Marvel) • Umbrella Academy Vol. 3 A thought for next month: Could we do the Jane Foster Thor run?

2019-08-06 14:02:18 +0000 UTCRequired Reading: Paper girls - I adored this series, and ended up finishing it in about 2 or 3 days. I was so attached to every character, and the way the plot looped back around on itself was so satisfying to see. I loved the variety of settings throughout time, not only were they well chosen but they were all used so well, from characters meeting older versions of themselves or just seeing all the weird quirks of the future. The ending was so sweet and was a great way to leave the characters, I'm glad they decided to end the series at its natural conclusion and not drag it on for another 50+ issues. (Also I just realised Mac is still going to die early and I’m sad now) Superman's pal: Jimmy Olsen (2019) - Fractions at it again with a charming homage to silver age stories, it's perfectly absurd and whimsical with a great sense of humour, I can’t wait to see where it goes. Silver Surfer Black (2019) - This is one of the most artistically creative books from the main two at the moment, with a psychedelic and warped style that perfectly encapsulates the tone. The writing and monologues are moody and beautiful, and it looks like this is going to turn out to be a great miniseries. Daredevil (2019) Chip Zdarsky has been doing a great job with the character, hitting that perfect balance of charming and unhinged. It does have a few familiar tropes, like the tough anti-vigilante cop, or the hero once again trying hanging up the mantle, but otherwise the story and characters are super compelling, and the artwork is great as well.
