(Not) Kinda Funny Day 2022

Seven years of Kinda Funny: can you believe it?
I know that I – hi, it’s Greg writing this – can’t. It seems like only yesterday that myself and the other founders were at IGN wrapping our heads around the fact that we were actually leaving, and now, we’re a team of 11 full-timers, four regular part-time hosts, and a menagerie of freelance editors, musicians, and more.
Kinda Funny at 7 years old is more than I could’ve possibly imagined it ever becoming, and that’s because of you.
Thank you.
But believe it or not, this *isn’t* the time to get sappy. That’ll come later this year. In case you missed it, we got a brand new state of the art studio in 2020 – it’s five times larger than our last spot. The plan was to move in in 2020, but then, the world fell apart. Then, we thought we’d move in 2021, but gee whiz, permits sure are hard to get when the people who approve them don’t go to the office any more.
The hope was to open the studio on Kinda Funny’s anniversary, but as we got closer to this month, we realized that wasn’t in the cards – construction was taking longer than we wanted, and even if we pushed everyone involved, the only thing we could guarantee would be burnout. So, we pulled up, pushed the date, and will start the year working from home.
As such, we’re not doing our usual 12-hour Kinda Funny Day steam where we announce all of our plans for the new year and push for new shows. Instead, we’ll save that for when the studio is ready to go. So, by all means, celebrate with us this week, but don’t go big until the real deal. ;)
But, we wouldn’t be us if we didn’t have SOMETHING to say this week, right? So, what’re the big topics for (Not) Kinda Funny Day 2022?
Celebrate the Seven on the Seventh
Friday, January 7th, we’re going to celebrate seven years of Kinda Funny with a big ol’ stream. Kinda Funny Games Daily will kick the day off as always, but then, we’ll start a mini-celebration stream with y’all. There will be Mario Party, pizza, and Mike and Kevin probably streaming far too long.
New Content, New Content Plan
The Studio Launch will see the BIG announcements and new initiatives, but it’s still a new year, and we’ve never been ones to rest on our laurels.
Roger has assembled a talented team of freelance editors who are going to make Kinda Funny’s TikTok sing. By the end of the month, we’re hoping to have a new Kinda Funny clip pulled and edited from one of the shows each and every weekday. These will be new bits and old classics. Rog and team are going to start uploading this week, so subscribe now!
Hopefully, those clips will tide you over as you see some content getting sunsetted. When we moved to the work from home setup, we were all anchored to our desks and had nothing to do but talk to each other. This led to us doubling up on Kinda Funny Podcasts and In Reviews. As we move toward launching the studio, you can expect to see those double dips fade away and us move both shows back to one episode a week. Why? Well, first, it’s a lot. The audience has said it’s too much to keep up with and our staff has said it burns them out a bit. We don’t like either of those statements. Beyond that – BEYOND! – when we get to the office, we’re going to need bandwidth to make new shows, stream more, and so on. We figure we should start freeing up that time now to let our creative juices flow and establish what the core cadence of content will be going forward. Does this mean you’ll never get two KF Podcasts or In Reviews again? Of course not, (You’re getting two In Reviews this week.) but those we’ll be the exceptions rather than the rules.
We’ve also heard your feedback on Screencast, so Trailer Reactions are going to start posting on the Screencast podcast feed so that you can listen in if that’s your jam.
New Monthly Merch
We’re excited to get back to something we haven’t done in a long time: monthly merch updates. Joey has been hard at work with Campfire Designs to come up with new, rad Kinda Funny clothing, and the plan is to roll out a new line the first week of every month. I know, I know – we’re a small team and often slip on dates we say, but we’re locked on this. I’ve seen the whole run from here to December, and it’s the coolest merch we’ve ever done. Don’t think of a logo on a shirt, think of a cool thing to wear and have normies compliment you on… with maybe a logo tossed in there.
New Studio When?
And then, probably the biggest question of the week: if we’re waiting to do Kinda Funny Day when the new studio is ready, when will the new studio be ready?
The answer… is the incredibly boring “When we know, you’ll know.”
We’ve finally learned to stop putting dates on things if we’re not 100 percent sure we’ll hit it. Right now, we have a date we’re confident in, but rather than let the pandemic wheel of disaster spin for us again, we’re playing the cards close to the chest.
What I can tell you is this: this studio is going to blow you away. On Christmas Eve, Kevin opened it up so I could show Gen and my Dad the space, and both of them were floored. *I* was floored. The hype video Tim made to tease y’all doesn’t do it justice, and when you finally see it, it’s going to be so far above and beyond what you expect.
This week, we’re celebrating seven years, but this studio is our next 10 years – if not more. We’re going to be there before you know it, and I can’t wait to show it to you – of course – but I’m even more excited to give the team the building they deserve.
Any Questions?
So, yeah, that’s how we’re not celebrating our seventh anniversary just yet. Come hang out and pat us on the back, but save the champagne for a bit.
Feel free to drop questions below, and I’ll check in throughout the next 24 hours to do my best at answering. If I miss it or you miss me, Tim and Joey are doing this month’s Patreon AMA and I’m next month’s, so don’t be afraid to hit us up there!
I love you all and am so thrilled with what you’ve helped us create. Here’s to 70 more.
Greg

2022-01-04 21:02:42 +0000 UTCI’m excited by the reductions of shows honestly. I slipped behind on the KFP months ago, and even over break I think I still have 3 left. And In Review I’d love to keep up with, but it’s so many movies and podcasts to keep up with.

2022-01-03 23:13:00 +0000 UTCMuch love to everyone from here in Australia. Respect the decisions, I definitely have a lot of KF Podcast to catch up on 😂 Keen to have the stream on in the background while I’m working from home on Friday (your Thursday). Never been able to do that until my new job!

Is the clothing line you mention in this at the top of each month for platinum folks, or is this one just a coincidence? Love getting the shirts as they come thru for, so was just curious!
