Ep 97 - Fortune Favors The Bolt Cutters w/ Hether Fortune

Returning guest Hether Fortune (@hetherrfortune) joins Jamie for a super chill music and culture episode to get your mind off the ongoing apocalypse. After the prerequisite quar talk, the gals discuss kittens, Gary Busey, Lena Dunham, and the odious offspring of everyone's favorite thin-skinned billionaire and his biomechanical child bride. Last but certainly not least, the gals discuss Fiona Apple's tour de force fifth studio album "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" and why Fiona's fearless truth-telling is a balm for our souls in these uncertain times.

Intro/interstitial: Fiona Apple - Shameika
Closing: Fiona Apple - Ladies

I might have zoned out during the podcast, but did it get mention that Fiona Apple included a land recognition in the Fetch the Bolt Cutters album notes? “Made on unceded Tongva, Mescalero Apache, and Suma territories.” Because print has more permanence than just bringing it up at shows. Even somebody who never sees her live could read it. Although, a land recognition would change from place to place of performance, so there would be value in doing them as a practice. It’s a serious statement to have the place of album recording documented. https://www.democracynow.org/2020/4/28/fiona_apple_fetch_the_bolt_cutters

On the British and our angry/chill use of the word “c**t” ... visit or research Caernarfon, North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 — the word has worked it’s way into the vocabulary since around WW2 (by all accounts). I’ve heard cute little grandmothers use it, the welsh version that is, which is “cont”. It’s mostly used as a fond greeting, or is simply as throwaway mark of recognition like buddy, pal, mate or amigo. Don’t let that put you off visiting when all this is cleared up though. North Wales has the oldest DNA in Britain according to a 2015 study - https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/new-genetic-map-of-britain-shows-successive-waves-of-immigration-going-back-10000-years-10117361.html%3Famp And the language is ancient... we’re a fun bunch. On cops. I’m starting to understand that US cops are perhaps a totally different breed to UK cops. Perhaps policing by consent would be a worthy campaign promise (goal?) for future leftist endeavours. It’s not a fix all one stop shop but it would perhaps further the cause? I’m ex military & ambulance service myself and I do worry about the dehumanising language used by all and any sides. Cops are people at the end of the day (yes I’m aware of existing nazi police stations no longer affiliated with the FBI etc.) but there are always scared, insecure, confused people that could be won over instead of shunned. Many cops are sick and traumatised due to the system — you literally cannot be a psychopath and have PTSD... if you see where I’m coming from? I’m just not a fan of broad, sweeping statements and declarations about large diverse groups of people... absolutist thinking is something we can do better on. Nuance and permutation is the enemy of the conservative, not the leftist, no matter where you sit. So absolutely fuck literal, nazi white suprematist and fascist cops but also some cops, soldiers need our help as much as we need theirs. Solidarity. The struggle continues.

I can’t waste too much energy putting detail into explaining what I don’t like about Amanda Palmer, mostly because I just don’t listen to her enough to have that many details. And at times I can’t hear her voice as anything other than a poor Robert Smith knockoff. It is cool that The Legendary Pink Dots are among or maybe even her favorite music group, and she even recorded an album with Edward Ka-Spel. I am more of a Skinny Puppy, Ministry, and KMFDM person when it comes to big-name Industrial bands, but I can’t lie and say I pretty much didn’t start out with The Fragile by NIN. Boo you guys are too mainstream ha ha love ya.
