(CROSSPOST from Trillbillies Workers Party) Introducing Year Zero, a new miniseries on political economy hosted by Tarence. In this first episode we speak with Sean KB (@as_a_worker on twitter)from the Antifada podcast (@the_antifada) about what he terms The Thousand Year Stare: the specific feeling one unlocks by reading Giovanni Arrighi's "The Long Twentieth Century." We'll be using the book to discuss the chaotic times in which we live, but don't worry: you don't have to have read it to follow along in the conversation. You just have to be willing to face the past, present, and future with a perfected thousand year stare...
Some friendly criticism: could you work on the sound quality for Sean's segments? There is a lot of background noise that makes the episodes hard to listen with headphones. I hear lots of bumping of the mic, a pump in the background. Makes your eps real difficult to listen to.
Some suggestions: physically isolate your mic from your desk, use this free program called "Peace APO" to equalize the sound/reduce the mic gain. There are 3rd party noise suppression apps like Krisp but I've never used it.
I know Sean you mentioned that your trying to work out living in a new place with a billion people so I understand, just hoping that it get better in the future.

Recently I have rewatched the Zeitheigst movie and it actually sounded to me way less far-fetched than it did 10 years ago. I definitely didn't get any anti-semitic impression from it, but perhaps it was part of the discourse around the movie when it came out.
I actually checked out after that some interviews with Peter Joseph, the author of the 'performance art piece', as he calls it, and was rather surprised by his analysis of capitalism. He's definitely no libertarian, to say the least. I recommend you check out his interview with Abby Martin for Empire Files.

Great episode. With respect to China and U.S. Treasury Debt, this isn't China's real point of leverage. China has built up reserves of US denominated assets over the years as a means of supporting its export driven growth model. The real challenge to U.S. global economic hegemony would be if China's currency was freely traded and supplanted the U.S. dollar as the de facto currency used in global trade. The irony is that, in order for this to happen, China would likely need to financialize its own economy.

Financialization installs a parasitic hegemony. Kind of slippery slope language in ways it’s played out with scapegoating, but not inaccurate.

I'd be curious to hear how you read Andre Gunder Frank's interpretation of world systems theory (especially ReORIENT) as he basically disputes the premise that the world system emerges in Europe. I've only read part of it but an interesting way of accounting for East Asian influence on the development of capitalism
