2023-03-14 14:59:07 +0000 UTCIs Joel a bad guy? Yes. Is he THE bad guy? No. Honestly both he and the Fireflies make terrible decisions. Joel decides to burn the world to save Ellie. Not because it's what she would want or it's the right thing, but because he thinks it's the one thing that will save himself. Especially when you take into account the flashback scene in the final episode, Marlene seems to do the "right" thing without any bedside manner. To me, they're both wrong, but neither are completely at fault. The part that's always bothered me is that there's no discussion at all about it, even if Ellie's knocked out and not part of the conversation. Yes, the cordyceps grow in the brain, but did they do any tests? Blood, cerebrospinal fluid, biopsy of the cordyceps and/or brain to see if they can find anything. You mention that Neil has said that "it would have worked", but looking at it objectively you can't guarantee that it would work. Hell, it could be that they need her alive to keep producing whatever it is that could be used as a cure. Even if her death guaranteed the creation of a cure, the Firefly doctors didn't go through all of the other tests to find out why she's immune and how to create a cure, or at least they didn't show it. So yes, I agree Joe's a bad guy. However, I do feel he made the right decision to save her. He may have gone about it the completely wrong way and made some very bad decisions around the whole process, but his decision to save her isn't the wrong one in my opinion.

2023-03-14 01:03:04 +0000 UTCWe know what that trauma did to Joel 20 years earlier, and it’s made even more explicit in the show with what he reveals to Ellie. His actions aren’t just him trying to protect her, it’s him fighting for his own life, he can’t go through that again. If she’s gone, he’s gone. I think it’s survival instincts as much as it is parental.
