If material conditions change for the better, I think it's human nature to take the new context for granted over time. Most of these people interviewed in this article were either not alive or children when the community was built. What's more recent is the memory of the decline. The way that people form the associations in memory and who gets blamed is another matter (e.g. influenced by media, community, experience, etc). Also agree that HAW provides a useful framework for understanding these issues.

Not only were the inmates forced to work for private German companies, which profited handsomely from the war economy, but their valuables were sold off. "Arisierung" was not code for nationalization, but rather changing ownership. The original Nazis were - despite their usage of "Socialism" in their election propaganda - very much pro-business, and very much pro-free market, as long as the right people did the profiteering.
