Ep 137 - Work Sucks (I Know) w/ Sarah Jaffe

Author and journalist Sarah Jaffe (@sarahljaffe) joins Sean and Jamie to discuss her new book, "Work Won't Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted, and Alone." Antifada listeners know "do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life" is a dirty lie told by capitalists. But where did this idea come from? In this book, Jaffe traces the rise of "labor of love" ideology to the neoliberal turn of the 1970s, explains how it intersects with racism and sexism, shows how it damages workers, and lastly, gives some ideas for how to defeat it.

Great episode, going to put this book in my list! Totally unrelated but Sean there’s no /r/ in Madonna, which Madone is short for. Although there are dialect words that turn the trill r into a d, this isn’t one of them.

I’m sad Sean had to peace. Too many “actuallys” but decent episode.

Yup MR is so boring without Jamie. Good show today though. Always like the Sarah interviews. She always makes me wanna quit my job n move to a different country n work as a sheep herder or something.

I'm not quite finished with the interview, so maybe you circle back, but I found it weird that teachers and nurses were discussed in a separate segment from jobs considered to be a "public service". At least here, in Canada, every time a wage increase is debated for either profession the argument always goes back to how they should accept lower wages because knowing they're doing a service to society is somehow a part of the compensation. Something that weirdly enough never gets said for police or doctors.
