Ep 194 - Gilt Trip (full episode)

Sean and Andy talk about our various malaises: personal, political, and economic. Why does everything feel like shit in the present moment? Is it just us or...

Topics covered include the ideological seduction of 'the left wing of the possible', the near collapse of pension funds in the UK from zombie Thatcherism, what its like working inside a secure state facility behind unscalable fences, the economic outlook for workers in the United States, and the Amazon/Netflix-theory of the contemporary spectacle.

This was exactly my experience with DSA. I tried to talk to the people about building an organic link with the working class through organizing but it was like I was speaking a different language. All the organizing looked like campaigning, which can only use power (that we don't have) but can't build it

Not long enough.

I think that’s not a correct picture of how things played out in Bolivia - the government continues to come into conflict with workers self-organisation/indigenous struggle: it is a barrier to these developing further.

Really great episode. I was wondering, re: "the left wing of the possible", how y'all look at something like Bolivia, where we have something that isn't exactly a revolutionary socialist project in the traditional sense, but IS clearly giving the Bolivian working classes something to really fight for, as well as bucking rather significantly the economic malaise gunking up the world economy? Do y'all see any lessons for us in the Bolivian project and maybe in the MAS's relationship between govt and social forces?

Very glad Sean went into rank-and-file shop floor organising because it’s unfortunate that Andy’s instinct (which I suspect goes to his crimethinc influenced version of anarchism, rather than classical mass-anarchism) is seemingly to set up this false binary of a) proletarian force of insurrection (I’m guessing he means ‘people in the streets’) & b) the liberal politics of parliamentarianism - the actually important revolutionary critique of many within groups like DSA as being ‘stupid liberals’ is not that they’re pushing for reforms, and not ‘plugging in’ to (for now) non-existent proletarian insurrection, but that this is a dead-end distraction from the *actual force* which allows us to extract reforms: day-to-day organising at the point of production & direct struggle against capital. That’s the non-reformist approach to ‘left wing of the possible’ reforms; not party politics and ‘organising’ in the form of door knocking, canvassing, phone banking, recruiting to campaigns, etc.

Matt Crossin

I appreciate the no bs approach to this podcast. Yes there's humor but neither of u sugarcoat what you see and that's what I'm happy to pay for. We are in this together and just because we're powerless to some things doesn't mean we can't do our best to make the world a better place in our own individual ways.

Greg

Props to Andy for admitting to not always understanding Sean's secular stagnation rants. There's plenty of people out there who could understand it with a little background on the theory and defining terms, myself included. Always a fascinating listen though

we're all in it together brother

This was a black pill episode for sure. I like listening to you two chat because your both smart and analyze the situation in a way that makes sense to me (for the most part) but often, and especially today I’m left feeling intellectually stimulated but simultaneously like so fucking confused. Like what the fuck am I supposed to do? Feeling crushed under the massive weight of history, the forces of capital etc.

Did you guys see the high viz assassin in Vegas? They wore a reflective shirt and a big brimmed hat and covered every other part of their skin. The reflective part fucked up the exposure of the security cameras so that their face couldn't be seen under the brim. They stabbed a journalist investigating Paddock (among other things) while looking like a gardener. Works best in broad daylight.
