Ep 203 - Literacy is Overrated w/ Ian Svenonius

Ian Svenonius is a rock singer turned Marxist polemicist with his new book Against the Written Word. We discuss his theory of literacy as a tool of the bourgeoisie and how rock n' roll reeducation camps might be the antidote, and why that might not go far enough for as to completely devolve to our neanderthal origins.

The Internet does need to be destroyed though. When Rogers internet went down across Canada for a whole day, I had a pretty great time walking around, chatting to neighbours, surprise visits to friends. I felt free to be bored in a way that I haven't since I was a kid. The thing that sucked is that only half of us were without internet. Legitimately fucks me up to think that I could spend more time offline like that... but I just won't.

This might be antithetical to some of the stuff Ian is talking about, but I feel like electronic music today possess some element of that sort of primitive garden of Eden-esque ethos. Electronic music in many genres does serve to express in ways which can be without language or possesses "devolved" language. Also, like the early days of rock it's given rise to younger people without a major corporate backing to get an audience through things like netlabels.

Contemporary archaeology in Spain shows Neanderthals did do complex symbolic art. It’s a myth that they had no such concept.
