Hey Greg, what ever happened to the The Kinda Funny Smiley Awards 2024? There was a great showing for 2023 and there seemed to be a lot of love from the team for it as well.

I appreciate your reviews but also can understand where the negative perception comes from. Something y’all remind us is that a 7 isn’t a bad game, 7 literally means good. But when you review you focus on the criticisms to justify the “low score” and often the criticisms overwhelm the conversation as opposed to focusing on the things that make it good. With avowed specifically there were even a few times when Paris brought up a positive point and you had a rebuttal explaining why you didn’t like that or it didn’t work for you. Again I enjoy that but just pointing out where I think this sentiment comes from

I don’t think you’ve been negative more than critical. In life we tend to hear the bad things louder than the good things, as is likely the same with game reviews. You always make sure to mention what you like about a game and what you dislike. Other pods I’ve listened to that review games don’t often tend to be as good about presenting the good AND the bad, so keep up the good work!

I've also noticed a bit of a trend for the review conversation to come off more negative than the score being given. Makes me think of how no one talks about a good toupee. When a game is doing the job well, we don't necessarily notice it and when there's something worth being critical of, it's easy to spend more time breaking down how you feel, why it's a problem, etc. You've said on several of the reviews mentioned the things you've felt positively about/enjoyed, but it's seemed like more time is given to things that weren't so great, but it is what it is. As long as you say everything you think you need to, there's not much else to be done

Thinking about your reviews, you said in this Gregway, “I’ve just played a lot so I’m more critical.” And that to me is probably the big disconnect with all of us who are often frustrated when you’re more critical. To me, I feel like that’s not fair (I’m personally not even a fan of review scores in any fashion, but I digress) to the developers or gamers. Not because what you’re saying or feeling isn’t perfectly valid and well backed, but because we are so far removed from that standing that it’s hard to connect. In my personal opinion, I will always champion removing the number and word score, and just simply say, “I recommend it,” or “I don’t,” or even, “I like it,” or “I don’t like it.” And I know that completely removes views and engagement, but I have to imagine the pushback would be less severe if the result was, “I’m not a fan of this game, here’s why,” versus, “this game is a 6, and is a bad game, here’s why.”

It's gotta be tough when you respect what it takes to make a game but also have to look at it with a critical eye. At the end of the day I come to this channel to hear you speak critically about games. Sometimes you save me money and lots of times you sell me on a game I had no interest in (usually indie games but not the indie game). If you gave every game a score of 8.5-10 I wouldn't be here any more.

I'm just no longer as aligned with your taste I used to be, or as I thought I was. It's nobody's fault. It happens. I saw the shift happening with me during the Ghostwire: Tokyo review. That was a game that I loved, but you didn't seem to enjoy very much. That's totally fine. Bringing it back to Avowed though, I definitely align with your thoughts on it for the most part. It's a KF 7.5 for me as well at about 12 hours in, but I'm latching onto the lore and that's the reason for me to keep going from a writing perspective. It feels like I'm a bit higher on the game as a result. Like with you, this is also my first experience with the Pillars universe. It's all about differing tastes from my end at least.

You’ve been cooking lately Greg keep it up. Your reviews (higher and lower) are better than they have ever been since I started listening to Beyond back in the day. I love the extra evidence you’ve been bringing

Greg listener for 10+ years here. I would assume this comment came from the Indy and Avowed reviews which (seemingly) had an imbalance of airtime spent discussing your negative critiques of recent games compared to time spent hearing what you liked about them! Sometimes it can seem like a pile-on of negative feedback. Love you

Nintenjoe

I’m listening to this and I don’t think you have been negative at all. I think people just get more upset these days about everything. Everything is either or 10 or bad in their eyes. A 7.5 is a good score. 80s on metacritic is great. There are only a few generation defining experiences. Everyone likes different things. And that is okay. I will add a question as well and you have probably answered this a million times but what is a game that you initially put down and didn’t like only to come back to it and fall in love with it?
