So when I was younger and like you said physical media was the only thing we had, for me pre-orders would be like you said to ensure you had a copy ready and available, but also I feel l would use pre-orders as a sort of layaway, allowing me as a young dumb broke kid to put a little bit of money on the game I was excited for gradually until it's paid for. Additionally, I worked at GameStop for 4ish years since I was a junior in high school until I enlisted in the military and a small tiny part of it was to help our store along with our pre-order numbers.
