WOFF POLL: Reboots/Remakes

They're familiar, but not too familiar, but not too not-familiar.
It's time for Spring 2016's poll, where patrons can choose which game we cover for an episode in May. This time, we're looking at the wide world of video game remakes and reboots. We've selected five very good candidates, and you can learn more about them below.
The deadline for voting is Friday, April 6. Please advocate for your favorite titles in the comments!
- Doom (2016, PC/PS4/XBONE). Doom 2016 was a very successful adaptation and updating of the classic Doom formula. This means it's far from brainless, but a surprisingly clever rethinking of the pace of first person shooters.
- Mega Man Powered Up (2006, PSP). Powered Up is a remake of the first Mega Man game, which is kind of hard to go back to. The update makes it friendlier, and softens the looks with adorable chibi visuals. Also, there's a level editor.
- Metroid: Zero Mission (2004, GBA). Zero Mission is a retelling of Samus' first trip to planet Zebes. It takes the structure and conceit of the first game and updates it to play like Super Metroid.
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009, Wii). Shattered Memories is the biggest shakeup the Silent Hill series ever saw. A re-imagining of the first game, you play as Harry as he searches the town for his lost child, Cheryl. It throws nearly everything out the window, making for a terrifying and psychologically unpredictable experience.
- Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014, PC/PS4/XBONE). The New Order throws out the continuity of the past Wolfenstein games and instead asks the question: What if the Nazis won World War II? BJ Blazkowicz wakes up from a coma to a world that's very different from our own, and he sets out to set things right.

2018-05-19 20:13:16 +0000 UTCI’d love to hear you guys talk about Silent Hill, but only if it’s one of the first three.

2018-05-19 18:53:47 +0000 UTCGo Silent Hill! I love when you cover those games!

2018-04-01 08:55:13 +0000 UTCI'll go with Wolfenstein that was the very first time I saw Bethesda do something new and exciting while also publishing a dang good game. Doom is also among this group of surprising games I liked but Wolfenstein was way more unexpected.

2018-03-31 16:49:25 +0000 UTCThis is a real hard vote. My Heart says ID, but which one...

2018-03-30 22:17:45 +0000 UTCI'm very much pro-hearing Gary and Kole talk about "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories".

2018-03-29 15:13:19 +0000 UTCI REALLY wanted to vote for Doom, because I just started it, and I think there's a lot to dig into; however, I cannot, under any circumstances, pass up an opportunity to hear the Episode Boys talk Silent Hill.

2018-03-29 03:52:23 +0000 UTCDamn...can you just do all of them?

2018-03-27 20:12:21 +0000 UTCExcited to hear about any of these, so I can't lose!

2018-03-27 15:14:56 +0000 UTCI can't believe Doom is in the lead, it's mechanically excellent, but Wolf' would make a far better WOFF episode for the story stuff and deeper set of play-style options

2018-03-26 18:33:56 +0000 UTCmegaman needs more love, with all the added content its amazing

2018-03-26 14:47:01 +0000 UTCSH: SM is a good option for me, as since WOFF has covered SH before, it lends itself well to discussing the differences between the older games and this one.

2018-03-26 13:27:46 +0000 UTCDoom is amazing and worth it just to hear that soundtrack a few times during the episode. I'd also like to hear your thoughts on the fusion of old- and new school shooter mechanics and how succesful it is. Zero Mission is my second pick, a great game and my entry into the 2D-metroids, but it might not have enough meat on the bone for a full entry of WOFF. Wolf: TNO is a great game as well, and I'd like to hear you guys speak about it, but it might be a better pick for the inevitable KILL ALL NAZIS month along with TOB and TNC for instance.

2018-03-26 12:03:06 +0000 UTCI voted for Shattered Memories because I think it would the most interesting "what went right/wrong" as far as the remake/reboot theme goes. Almost like an Adaptation Decay. Doom is great, and would make a great episode too.

2018-03-26 11:05:58 +0000 UTCDOOM is one of the most incredible experiences I've had the opportunity to play. Hearing Kole talk about Silent Hill would be great, but there is just almost nothing wasted in DOOM and I want to hear that joy.

2018-03-26 08:37:39 +0000 UTCThis is the most conflicted I've ever been on a poll. These are all winners.

2018-03-26 07:57:40 +0000 UTCI voted for Metroid, since it's the only one on the list that I've played- but I can understand why not many people voted for it. It's one hell of a game (my favorite Metroid game, to be honest) but overall I don't think it would be as interesting to talk about as some of the others on there.

2018-03-26 07:41:57 +0000 UTCVoted Wolfenstein, but they're all pretty good. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has a ton of problems if you play it more than once, but it's at least pretty interesting.
Samuel Bair
2018-03-26 07:37:33 +0000 UTCI love all of these games so choosing was tough, but I ended up going with Silent Hill because I still can't tell if that game was good or bad but it's definitely interesting.
Michael Lacerna
2018-03-26 04:04:41 +0000 UTCI really thought Wolfenstein would run away with this one. Doom was a close second for me personally though
Kevin Fitzgerald
2018-03-26 03:07:02 +0000 UTCI voted Wolfenstein, but Silent Hill is A-OK with me.
Christopher Williams
2018-03-26 02:25:35 +0000 UTCThey're all great, but yeah, Shattered Memories has A LOT to discuss.
Robin Enrico
2018-03-26 01:51:09 +0000 UTCI voted DOOM so that I will finally beat DOOM
Pat Doherty
2018-03-26 01:37:16 +0000 UTCIt appears im on the losing end of this vote, but when the reploids rise up just remember who had your back.....
The RPG Luminary BAY BAY!!!!
2018-03-26 00:22:43 +0000 UTCI really want both Doom and Silent Hill. I'm having a hard time deciding on this one.
Michael Greenwell
2018-03-26 00:16:11 +0000 UTCA fine vote but we've both played Zero Mission and love it! I don't think the toughness would be a factor.

2018-03-25 23:33:01 +0000 UTCReally want you to do both Wolfenstein (amazing story) and Doom (great gameplay).
Abe
2018-03-25 23:05:02 +0000 UTCvoted for silent hill, but man do i also want them to do DOOM.
FlatErica
2018-03-25 22:19:56 +0000 UTCDOOM, if only so I can hear some sweet metal.
Chris Taylor
2018-03-25 22:16:55 +0000 UTCSilent Hill would present the most to talk about I think. But I think I like every game on the list more as games.
Frank Horrigan
2018-03-25 22:09:34 +0000 UTCI voted for Wolfenstein New Order so that I get an excuse to finally play through the damn thing and also because it's weirdly relevant in this political climate.
Mafu
2018-03-25 21:47:53 +0000 UTCVoting for Silent Hill cause I'm sure you'll have interesting things to say on it and I don't think you'd like Mega Man Powered Up (it's both anime and hard) or Metroid Zero Mission (which is harder than Fusion even).
