WOFF Poll: Indie Horror Poll
Added 2018-08-23 17:44:09 +0000 UTC
It's hard to believe that we're coming up to October already, but I am very excited to announce our plans for the scariest month of the year: We are doing an indie horror theme month. And to start it off, we want you to help us pick a meaty indie horror game to sink our teeth into. Below are five options, so read up on them and consider what you think would be best.
- Cry of Fear (PC, 2012). One of the most famous Half-Life mods of all time, this is a crunchy first person horror game with a branching story. One day Simon was hit by a car, and then things got worse.
- Kholat (PC, 2015). A Polish-developed exploration-based horror game inspired by the Dyatlov Pass Incident, which is an infamous missing-persons case from Russia.
- Layers of Fear (PC, 2016). This game is all about exploring a mansion with endless, shifting, and malevolent architecture in order to discover your own violent past.
- Penumbra: Overture (PC, 2007). Before they made Amnesia, Frictional made Penumbra. This is where they honed their particular style of stealth and pursuit-based horror, with a Lovecraftian tale of arctic exploration gone mad.
- Stories Untold (PC, 2017). This strange episodic indie game is all about the horror of interfaces, and what's revealed by turns as we exert what little control we can over the world around us.
The deadline for voting is Friday, September 7. We will play this game at the beginning of October, along with our other indie horror episodes: a special about "micro-horror games" and Night in the Woods.

2018-09-10 14:11:47 +0000 UTCI'm voting Layers of Fear, because it will make me play it, since I have it on multiple services and have never touched it. (I'm not sure how I originally got it on Steam, but I'm pretty sure GoG gave it to me on a Steam Connect.)

2018-08-24 03:21:58 +0000 UTCThis is also a good podcast on the Dyatlov Pass incident. https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-generation-why-podcast/e/45061332?autoplay=true

2018-08-23 18:01:18 +0000 UTCStuff You Should Know did an episode on the true story that Kholat is based on. It's pretty good! https://www.stuffyoushouldknow.com/podcasts/the-dyatlov-pass-mystery.htm

2018-08-23 17:58:20 +0000 UTCOof, this one is tough. Layers of Fear is no masterpiece, but does some REALLY smart and interesting things in unnerving you, even if there is no gameplay besides walking and looking around. Remind me of Amnesia in how they do so much with so little. (Also on sale for $1 right now: https://www.humblebundle.com/spooky-horror-bundle-2018) And I really enjoyed Stories Untold's re-imagining of the text adventure, and think you'd have tons to talk about.
