Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch March 2019

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Sunday, March 17.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

That "protect the seeds" scenario in Frostpunk is inspired from real life, and it's one of those stories I think y'all should really know about. During a siege in WW2, about a dozen Russian scientists starved to death while not eating the seed vaults they guarded. One article of many with more info: https://www.rbth.com/blogs/2014/05/12/the_men_who_starved_to_death_to_save_the_worlds_seeds_35135

Bioshock infinite and Frostpunk are my two favorite episodes of WoFF in a long while, and probably both in my top 5 all time despite being VERY different both in terms of the games themselves and the tone of the episode. Which do you think was better and what about each game brought out the energy you two had in both episodes.

David

Not a question, but I wanted to say that the energy on the network since the restructure is palpable. BFSC Rekindled and WOFF have been on fire and I can't wait for Unfilmable. I feel like this is as exciting as things have been since the heights of BFSC 1.0. Excellent work, gentlemen.

My question for the show: What are your thoughts on the ways that RPG currency and economic systems, capitalism, and the gold/gil standards drive the way we perceive these fantasy worlds? What does it say about the game and its creators when an economy is often driven by "kill enemy, loot gold, buy and sell stuff without bounds, repeat"? Is there a larger, potentially subconscious statement being made?

My suggestion for a topic would be something akin to "Perspective", or rather, how games were perceived as products of their time, how some games aged well and others are quite problematic in hindsight. This was a huge point being made in the Bioshock Infinite episode, and I know you both tackle it in part almost every show, but I think maybe having a bit of "bespoke selection" can help drive that topic a little more clearly. (If you cannot tell, I loved the Bioshock Infinite episode and the takeaways really made an impact).

I think it's a great question and gamer toxicity was actually going to be one of my questions as well. Totally understand your sentiment; I believe that it's often difficult to talk about or bring up because of how constantly present it is.

For ambitious young podcasters, what do you feel is currently the most viable platform to break in and get noticed? Assuming your content is actually worthwhile, original and has an audience, which is the hardest part.

Connor Burns

What's been the biggest creative difference between hosts that you're willing to discuss and how did the show or working relationship change in order to get through the incident? Thanks for all of your great work!

Not 100% sure if this is for commentary about what you've played so please ignore if im typing in the wrong place but as someone who's spent a lot of time playing the STALKER games, I highly recommend reading this Polygon piece https://www.polygon.com/features/2013/9/8/4568598/stalker-fallout-gsc-game-world ,which is about how GSC Gameworld fell apart and how those developers wound up forming 4A games (Metro 2033) and the much more dubious Vostok games (creators of STALKER knockoffs Survarium and the upcoming Fear the Wolves). There’s a lot of interesting tidbits but I thought I might mention Stalker 2, since it was briefly mentioned on your podcast. Basically, Sergei Grygorovych, the CEO of GSC Gameworld seems like a pretty bad dude. He lived a lavish lifestyle while consistently refusing to pay his staff a living wage. In 2012, this led some senior developers to leave GSC in disgust, establishing 4A games and beginning work on what would eventually become Metro 2033. Over the next few years, GSC employees who begin to chafe under Grygorovych migrated to 4A en masse. Many also migrated to Vostok Games, a company with a much more dubious track record whose sole release since its founding has been Survarium, a project that was originally billed as an MMOFPS and spiritual sequel to the Stalker games and has astonishingly bad monetization. A quick visit to the games digital shop shows you can buy a AK-12M1 “premium weapon” for the low, low price of $29.99. So who’s actually making Stalker 2? Well, probably nobody. The theory by those in the know is that the game’s announcement is actually just Grygorovych trying to drum up social media buzz to secure funding, but nobody who actually worked on the previous games is left at GSC (it's unclear if GSC actually employs anybody aside from Grygorovych) so it’s likely to end up as vaporware. Sorry for the novel-length comment! I just think this stuff is interesting.

I've been playing a lot of roguelikes/lites lately and wishing they were just 4 hour long linear games. What are your thoughts on the roguelike genre? Do you enjoy getting good enough to slowly overcome the challenge? Is there a game you would like to see turned into a roguelike?

William

My suggestion for discussion is sandwiches! What's the best one you've ever made, what's the best you've eaten when out and about, and are there any funny sandwich stories you can share? Thanks in advance! Nick

we've seen game developers tinkering with how games are made, marketed, and released in recent years. Is there another form of art/media production that you think video games could adapt some "ways of production from" or do you think video games are two different logistically, and have to have "find their own way" more or less?

Taylor Goodman

Since this is just a one sentence explanation, I'll hit it here: Kole started using that phrase and it's referring to a memory you dreamed up or think happened, but it really just got inceptioned into your mind or you though it happened long enough that you now don't know if it did or not!

P.S. Apologies for the miserable question, and sorry if it's too broad for the show. I'm just continually angered and saddened by the vitriol and wrongheadedness of gaming people online, and wanted you nice boys to commiserate with. Thanks for all the great shows! X

Do you guys have any theories as to why 'Gamers', going from places like Twitter, Steam, Reddit etc, often seem to be such rude, disrespectful, ignorant, naive, and entitled awful fucking people? I think some of it can be ascribed to age, but there are a lot of people who are definitely old enough to know better. And, bonus question, do you think there's anything that would help, or fix it?

Lewis Shaw

Just for fun, what foods do you like that either others don't or are hard to find/regional. One if mine are Herrs ketchup flavored chips, which taste something like a less potent salt and vinegar chip with tomato flavoring.

Markus Blomer

The hell is an Oprah memory? I've heard you mention it a dozen times, and get what it means from context clues, but having listen a goodly portion of your backlog I can't find what the term stems from, and the internet doesn't seems to think there's a single "Oprah Memory" moment. Is there a defining Oprah Memory? I must know! Thank you for the Fuppet introduction.

Any older games that you've played but haven't been able to track down due to not remembering the name because you were too young. I was an avid renter of 8 bit and 16 bit games from a small mom and pop rental shop near my grandmothers house. I have two games I vaguely remember that even with youtube lps I can't seem to track down. I'm sure that they are terrible and I only have a nostalgia factor blinding my memories, but they may be good abject suffering suggestions.

Greg here -- recently for my SNES Podcast we celebrated the 100th episode mark by having two special 'draft' episodes. For those not familiar with the concept, the people take turns picking a game for the system that they 'draft' for their own collection and that they really enjoy. We got four guest hosts for each episode who also did their own gaming podcasts, and the draft episodes did very well. However, I did get some flack for the fact that all eight guest hosts were white middle class guys in their 30's and 40's. It wasn't like I did that on purpose...it's just that 99 percent of hosts of gaming podcasts fit that group. For example, I'm only aware of two women who do gaming podcasts...one had little experience with the SNES and the other I asked and she declined. It made me realize however just how narrow and insular that our gaming podcast community is. I think this is a problem with podcasts in general, but it's more widespread here. What do you think we can do to encourage people from different backgrounds to do their own gaming podcasts and be more accepting of them?

Greg Polander

Any Youtube shows or vlogs you all have been into lately? Any topic, not necessarily games or anything network related.

Samuel Bair

What are some perfect games to you? Not your favorite or even one you necessarily love, but what game do you think is a total (or close to total) success at what it sets out to do? Examples I'd give off the top of my head: Tetris, NES + SNES Mario platformers, Binding of Isaac, Hollow Knight. -Zack

My Marvelous Year

You have to staff a JRPG party but only with twitter personalities (or if you are Kole, you can use SNL characters). Who, which roles and why?

Julia

You crash land on a deserted island. You can pick one Duckfeed host to help you survive together. Who is it and why?
