Call and Response: WOFF! Dispatch January 2018
Added 2019-01-12 00:27:33 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by January 19.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

2019-01-14 23:48:10 +0000 UTCWhat’s your opinion on the concept of inherent good and evil within a fantasy setting. Do you perhaps find it comforting? Does it hamstring your storytelling options? Does it turn tabletop rpgs into a fucking slog when the paladin wants to murder orc children? Please weigh in.

2019-01-14 19:09:15 +0000 UTCSorry to stick my nose in, but I just saw this on Gamasutra, and thought you might find it interesting, if moral choices are your thang: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/133712/ethics_101_designing_morality_in_.php

2019-01-14 18:11:48 +0000 UTCWhen I first played Lionhead's Black and White I didn't have a pet. Now that I do, I think that the Lionhead guys must be sociopaths...What do you think of that game? Why does it let you beat your creature until it's black and blue?!

2019-01-14 04:18:47 +0000 UTCWhat do you guys think about the Mass Effect series? I remember occasional, brief mentions on the show, but I'm curious to hear more about one of the only big Bioware games that woff hasn't tackled yet.

2019-01-14 03:38:35 +0000 UTCWhat are some non-widely-reviled game tropes you guys hate? Example: while playing Celeste, I realized that I have never, ever had fun with "high wind levels" in platformers, i.e. level 2 of Ninja Gaiden 2. But I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about them in the same way folks complain about, say, escort missions or water levels.

2019-01-13 15:49:57 +0000 UTCDo you talk for your kitties? Like, lots of people talk TO their animals--do you ever, like, make them respond? What's their 'voice' like?

2019-01-13 15:24:06 +0000 UTCdo you find it tough to find time to play games that aren't for the show/do you miss playing games under no deadline?

2019-01-12 19:00:24 +0000 UTCJust got the Legendary encounters X-files for christmas and oh boy is it thematic! We've already played 10 games with my wife. Had to order the Alien-version too. MoM 2nd edition really is thematic and quite simple to play with lots of theme.

2019-01-12 17:33:05 +0000 UTCIf you guys had the time/money/skills and could be a lead game designer, what would be the game you would design? Sequel or new IP? What mechanics would you borrow from other games?

2019-01-12 13:53:30 +0000 UTCI’ve heard you guys talk about tabletop RPGs a decent about, but do you play many board games at all? If you haven’t, Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition is one of the best Lovecraft games out there. Secondly, there are a ton of board game adaptations of video games with various levels of success, could be some great topics for Adaptation Decay...

2019-01-12 13:22:01 +0000 UTCDifficulty in games! When is difficulty good when is it bad? When can it be useful as a game design tool? Hardest games you ever played? Examples of good/bad hard games. Exampels of good/bad easy games.

2019-01-12 12:54:04 +0000 UTCYou are tasked with proving to someone that video games are more than just mindlessly moving a dot around a maze while beeps and boops play in the background. You don't know anything about this person or their preferences. You have one hour and will have their undivided attention for the whole hour. What game or games do you show them, and why?

2019-01-12 04:36:53 +0000 UTCDo you fellas have any VG versions of Homer Simpson's 10 foot long moldy sandwich? As in, games that you know you should just leave alone but can't stop yourselves from playing? (Ahh, Monster Hunter... how could I stay mad at you, old friend?)

2019-01-12 03:11:48 +0000 UTCWhat would the ideal conditions for a cozy gaming session be? Examples that give the general idea: a certain drink or snack, raining or dark outside, specific season, sitting in a couch or playing on a handheld in the bed, maybe a cat or other pet close by. Thanks!

2019-01-12 03:04:14 +0000 UTCWhat do you guys think of the box's that old systems used to come in(snes, sega, etc.)? Did you like them? what made them change or did they?

2019-01-12 02:37:34 +0000 UTCWhat are some games that you guys think have aged poorly and some that have aged well? I’m referring to story and mechanics over graphics. For example, I think the original Deus Ex, despite its silliness in some ways, has a lot to say about our present society. Thoughts?

2019-01-12 01:06:17 +0000 UTCWhat were some of the alternate titles considered for the various shows before you decided on what you did? How did you come up with some of the names?
Aaron A. Aaronson
2019-01-12 01:01:57 +0000 UTCI feel like games are a medium where it is possible to lose yourself in characters or moments in a deeper sense than more passive mediums, since you have agency over that character's actions. You can feel a direct mechanical connection to an action-game character or gain satisfaction from choosing narrative options. Of the games you'ce played for the show, what game's character have you most identified(mechanically, narratively, or both) with? Why?
Tom Jacques
2019-01-12 00:54:36 +0000 UTCOne genre of game you never seem to have covered for WOFF (though I might be wrong) is the rogue-like. Obviously Gary is a fan of the style of game. Is there any reason you avoid it for the show? Lack of traditional narrative and structure? Thanks, Zack
