The first in our series discussing our thoughts on the soundtracks of the Soulsborniro series!

Yeah I got so lost looking up the soundtrack at first. I was like ….none of these are what I remember and they’re terrible lol. Maiden Astrea is still good. I prefer the original still, but the remake does the opposite of Gary’s complaint here. It progresses.

5 years late, but this conversation ages well considering how the DeS remake completely homogenized the gem of a soundtrack the original was

FWIW I 100% put on the Dark Souls 2 soundtrack (along with all the souls OSTs) and do work : )

Love this one. And for your info, there are two books called Dark Souls: Beyond the Grave that go into a lot of detail on the games Demon's Souls through Dark Souls 3 (Bloodborne is in there too). One of the great things about these books is they have chapters dedicated to the music that really goes into a lot of detail. Highly recommended.

Love this idea for a series! Actually enjoyed this episode more than some of the Sekiro ones just because I was disappointed by Sekiro the game. And I’m in love with the Soulsborne OSTs. You guys seem to know a bit about music, so I’m excited to hear you bring that knowledge to more tracks.

Great episode!

Listened to this and now I'm listening to the OST. Liked the episode and look forward to the descent into overwhelming choruses booming through the DS games.

I tried to do a little more research on the composer, it looks like Kida Shunsuke also has credits on Dragonball Evolution, Jet Set Radio, Shaman King Funbari Spirits. I found a trailer for the movie Gozen Tokkyuu about a lady trying to choose between 5 guys, it looks like someone posted the whole movies for Enoshima Prism and The girl in a Sailor Uniform and Machine Gun Graduation on Youtube if you want to check those out.

Loving this episode. I'm not a big music guy, so hearing two guys give vocabulary to such a discussion was really good.

i dug this. Demon’s Souls has my favorite boss music (and bosses) in the series— the themes feel less like they’re setting you up for an epic battle with a big monster and more like they’re saying “what the FUCK is THAT thing”

I adore the Tower Knight fight too, even if I'm not with you on the ost. -GB

My favorite track is The Old One. Just like the dialogue in the fight, it's blatantly nihilistic. Demon's Souls has my favorite music of all the Souls games. Unfortunately, though, I just don't appreciate the campiness of it as much as you guys. I grew up with the Souls games on a healthy diet of bombast, so those are my formative memories. Can't wait to get further on in the series!

I was pretty cool on the Bloodborne ost my first play through. It was my second time through, dying to Gascoine, that I realized there were some gems in there. I was just sitting there waiting for YOU DIED to go away while The Hunter played and I realized, “Holy shit this is a banger.” There’s quite a few tracks that blend together for me but there’s not a game in the series that’s not true for, Bloodborne just has enough that stand out as well as songs from Demon’s Souls that they’re kinda tied for best in the series (in terms of soundtracks). To actually talk about Demon’s Souls though, y’all really hit most of my high points, especially with the “baby elephant walking” metaphor. My one point of contention is that I really enjoy the Tower Knight/Penetrator theme. The weirdness and percussiveness of the chanting really sets it apart from many of the tracks that came in the Dark Souls games and tried to invoke. The music adds to all of the other awesome aspects of Tower Knight and his presentation that place him in my top 10 for bosses in the series, so I am kind of biased.
