Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch for June 2019

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Sunday, June 16.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

I have a few games that I really enjoy, but I know aren't that good. Games like The Path, a very, very slow forest exploration game, and Silent Hill 4, a game that makes you repeat past levels with an escort mission slapped on top. Do either of you have games you like, but know aren't good? Why do y'all like those games?

if you could create a ____ Simulator game (e.g. Thief, Flight, Goat) what very specific thing would you like your game to simulate

Why are so many RPGs in the fantasy genre? Is there something about swords and sorcery that makes it jive with crunchy character progression gameplay? Is it just because of D&D? Are there literary genres (fantasy, sci-fi, spy stories, ect.) that just fit certain gameplay genres (rpg, fps, strategy, ect.) better?

What's the most deeply-held belief or opinion you've ever had completely change over the course of your life?

Matt Bixler! Hello!

What is your sweet spot in terms of time between a game being announced and it being released.

David

I recently cheesed the Demon of Hatred in Sekiro. It felt good to beat that piece of s**t by any means. It felt very good. Which cheat or cheese you've done in a game has given you the most satisfaction? (Btw the Tetris WOFF was absolutely goddam outstanding. Brilliant. Thank you for your work.)

Question: What's the most regional or unheard-of food or snack that you enjoy that we may have never heard about?

My long-form suggestion might be a bit too meta, but I would love to hear some discussion on how games fit themselves into a daily routine, how they can act as a surrogate for missing aspects of oneself, and how they can help provide stability during difficult times. The "play Tetris after trauma" part of the Tetris WOFF really got me thinking about how games like Disgaea and the Souls games fell into my life during my more difficult times.

How do you guys like your cheeseburgers? How do you like the meat cooked and what are your preferred toppings? What toppings do you find unacceptable?

(Greg here) As a struggling podcaster, I admire you guys and what you have done with both WOFF and the network over the years. I'm wondering if you can offer any advice as I've hit a brick wall in trying to grow my own. I've done all of the 'basic' things that most people suggest -- join a network so you can help promote your show and work with others; be hosted on sites like iTunes; be open to any and all feedback; publish on a fixed routine so that people know when to expect your podcast; and make sure it's well edited and produced. Despite all that, my numbers for views/downloads has remained static for a long time now and nothing I try seems to expand the numbers. It's not like I want to launch my own network as you guys did, just grow the show numbers which are pretty low. I understand that since I only focus on one system that limits the interested audience, but I'm not sure what else I can do when I'm a co-host on two podcasts and work a 40+ work week. Any advice/suggestions on this front would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Topic: The concept of Replayability in Gaming. What are some of the best ways to inspire replayability in a game? What are some of the worst? What does your most played game of all time say about what you look for in games? How has replayability evolved throughout the history of games? Has it evolved for the better or worse? I hope these questions spark conversation between you two, please feel free to pick and choose as you see fit.

Jade

We have a whole bonfireside chat about this next week :)

How do y’all take your coffee?

Possible Long Form Discussion Prompt: So I know you talked about what dates a game in a previous WOFF (and dating games in a more recent one) but given how much games discourse is about "greatest of all time" or "best in a series" how much of a handicap do you think it's fair to give older games? Rephrased, how much do you think the context of a game's release should matter when having those discussions, as silly as they may be (maybe those kinds of discussions are pointless?) Is it more important that a game was "groundbreaking" or should we just call it apples to apples and evaluate based on how NES games compare to playing modern games today?

Andrew T

Talk about cooking. What do you think of your cooking skills? What are your favorite things to make? What's your process for thinking of meals, buying ingredients, and putting it all together?

Shane

What are your thoughts on the Elden Ring announcement ? A more open world souls-like could go either way in my mind. Also, how are your kitty’s doing ?

Jake Bellwood

Also I'd like like to hear you talk about Jordan Peterson, I have only heard his podcasts in this past month but they have been helping me with the mental anxiety and depression I suffer from. I've heard his name brought up on your podcasts a handful of times and I just wondered why you have such a grudge against a guy who is genuinely helping people with mental issues.

Ronald MacDonald

I'd like to hear your political thoughts, why you think right wing politics are having a resurgence, your thoughts on political correctness, I'd like to hear a bit more controversy, perhaps a bit more evil. It's ok to be angry sometimes, express it. It isn't healthy to stifle yourself fully in a left wing perspective.

Ronald MacDonald

Long form topic or decent short form: What are your thoughts on hidden content in video games such as Easter eggs, secret levels, obscure mechanics, and alt/true endings. Finding things off the beaten path, like John Romeros head on a spike, is one of the most intimate experiences I've had with a video game and it's creators. I also thinks its interesting how these secrets and their relationship with players had substantially changed over the decades. With the advent of the internet hidden content has evolved from "created by warren robinett" and super rare item drops into puzzles that require teams of code breakers and game series with level-up systems that require fan made wikis to comprehend. Not to mention how gossip and magazines have been replaced by forums and Easter Egg compilation videos.

Uncle64

This question not only applies to video games, but I feel that video games are the most prevalent way to ask about it. Lately, it feels like there's less and less things to be passionate about or excited for, and it feels easier than ever to slip into a very cynical worldview of not just the industry, but of games overall. I was wondering if either of you deal with something like this, and if so, how do you overcome it?

Kelerak

Had this thought recently so wanted to pass on for potential discussion: WTF is up with “detective vision”? How has this become such a ubiquitous game mechanic in big budget RPGs and the like? I use the term “mechanic” loosely, because I don’t think I’ve seen it used in any way outside of a glorified hidden object search “puzzle”. It’s tedious and uninteresting. Do people like hidden object puzzles that much? Detective vision to me seems like a thinly veiled attempt at masquerading a visual technology showcase as abysmally limp gameplay. And to be frank, I’ve had quite enough of that shit. Say no to detective vision!!

Patric Fallon

Do either of you have video game inspired tattoos? I have a quote on my side from dark souls 2 that means a lot to me in a game sense and a life sense and an ironic sense as far as tattoos go. Its the quote that appears when using a bonfire ascetic: "what is done cannot be undone".

Sean J Hart

Do you know what's more trippy than playing The Tetris Effect in VR? Playing The Tetris Effect while under the influence of LSD! Though I don't intend to repeat that experience, what are some games you like to experience in an altered state of mind. I don't mean under the influence of a substance, necessarily. Maybe some games put you in state of meditation or some kind of trance? Sorry, if my question is a bit lowbrow, but i am genuinely interested in the idea of state of mind and state of play and how those things can overlap and effect one another.

Jonathan Scratch

What game genres have you fallen out of love with? Gary's abusive relationship with any JRPG he could get his hands on mirrors my own experience. I mean, name a terrible JRPG from the 16 and 32-bit eras, and I've played it. My question isn't just a Gary bait, though. I'm curious about Kole's experiences, and other genres Gary might not have mentioned. What genres used to be your bag, but now you just can't get into them? Why not?

Joshua Kane

Long or short form question but how pivotal is the first game you play or remember playing to shaping your overall perspective on games? How much is also influenced by console or technology limitations, life situations, and individual mindset - like how a youg child playing a game has a fundamental different experience than a teenager?

Markus Blomer

So possible long form discussion but maybe just a question I thought of could be about storytelling in games and 'cinematic experiences' - specifically, when you've spoken about games made by David Cage, Kojima etc you often discuss their use (or attempts at) film making techniques to tell stories, but often fail at this. I find this interesting as I a) have played games all my life and love story through play and b) work in the tv/film industry so know how to tell stories in that way. Short version of my question would be: What are the ways that games can tell stories in a way that other mediums can't? What innovations to story telling have games brought/could they develop in future? Why do so many game makers seem to be obsessed with 'cinema' but don't understand it. Thanks!

Dean Ayotte

With Duckfest(Quackcon) coming up in August, could you please share your favorite things about Portland? Any tips for visitors and fun things to do or avoid? Same for you, Kole! What do you find most enjoyable about Portland and what are you looking forward to?

Karlo Dieron

A weird random question for you, have you ever tried changing the gore/blood settings on Sekiro? I changed it to whatever the medium/middle setting was, and it changes all the blood to be black and makes the game look a little bit more odd and disturbing. Did you listen to Austin talk about Jedi Fallen Order, and how it is somewhat a souls/sekiro/star wars blend? Do you think it will end up potentially a BFSC game? What stuff from E3 or upcoming has piqued your interest? Thanks for all you do.

Limowreck

With Bloodlines and Baldurs Gate getting new games, what other series or sequels to single games that have been dormant, would you love to see?

Christopher Schlee

Hey guys! As much as I hope duckfeed lasts forever and you guys retire as cigar smoking, rich fat cats, nothing lasts forever. If something ever happened to duckfeed, would you guys stay podcasters, maybe try to go into another medium, or go back to your old careers? Thanks so much for all of the amazing content

Popofoshosho

If you were in a survival situation, such as stranded on a deserted island, and got to choose one video game character to bring into the real world to help you survive, who would you choose?

Ben

Ah, so it's a old-married-couple thing. Got it. In that case, I'll ask a different question. I'd be curious to hear about some of your favorite gaming interesting failures. What I mean by that are games that, holistically, do not quite come together, but perhaps are still games you personally enjoyed playing or found fascinating because they contain a particular moment, mechanic, etc. that was compelling, even if the overall game was not great.

Doug Lief

Have you ever considered expanding the Duckfeed network beyond shows with Kole and/or Gary, i.e, producing a show without being a host? -Zack

My Marvelous Year

Quick answer, so I'll do it here: Kole takes notes as he plays for his own purposes and just shares them with me. There are a few duties that have naturally just fallen into respective laps. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

Just out of curiosity, it seems that, at least for WOFF, Kole is always the one preparing the notes for the podcast. If so, how did that come about? Did Kole lose a bet? Does Gary have dirt on him? Is it a Tom-Sawyer-fence-painting swindle?
