I actually noticed that when watching but forgot to mention it on the show. Good catch! -GB

Speaking of Sekiro similarities, one I noticed that wasn’t mentioned came during the fight with that Sonic the Swordhog character. He’s quoting his rules for sword fighting to Manji, and the first he says is something like, “Defeating your enemy is 80% deflecting his attacks.” I could imagine an enthralled, pre-Sekiro Miyazaki hastily scrawling that quote into his game ideas journal on the spot.

So happy you dedicated an episode to this film. I’ve been a massive Takashi Miike fan since early 2000s but eventually lost track of his work. I’d completely forgotten to check in on his filmography, and this might be my favorite save for 13 Assassins. Which I’d highly recommend if your enjoyment of this movie extends beyond the Sekiro similarities.

I don't consider that to be a "well actually" at all, so we're good. We only watched the movie, so if the decision relied on characterization present in the manga but absent from the movie, it's still a valid complaint about the film.

Not to "Well, actually" but in the manga, they do some work to characterize Rin as someone incapable of killing (it's part of the joke about her being bad at the kunai thing), and so her reluctance to kill Anotsu probably comes from her underlying temperament than redeeming HIS character. The manga is striking visually but I am manga superfan, and still haven't returned to finish it FWIW.
