Call and Response: July 2019

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Monday, July 15.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Notice: We know we have a backlog of questions! That's why we're going to be releasing the first of our catch-up extra dispatch episodes to patrons starting this month.

Comments

This is a good question! If you remember, ask it again during the next call and response, just to remind usu.

Waaay too late for this Call & Response, I know, but I wanted to ask before it slipped my mind: How come you all didn’t make the jump to YouTube? As a fan, I’m really glad you didn’t—I think the podcast is perfect as-is and I prefer audio content over video—but it seems like a lot of your fellow content creators have been switching to the cameras over the microphone in the past few years. Is there more money on the YouTube/Twitch end?

This is a bit of a long-form question, so you may not have time: Dark Souls DLCs. We can all agree they're typically some of the best gamplay content in their respective games, but do they really enhance the lore or just tack on new stuff? Every season you guys approached any plot holes or gaps in lore with the attitude of "it will probably get answered in the DLC"; however, I feel (with the exception of Dark Souls) the DLC doesn't answer any questions about existing content- it just brings new content and explores that. (Dark Souls is the outlier with Artorias of the Abyss possibly doing that- it's hard to know because I wasn't around for lore speculation before the DLC- but there's datamining evidence that AotA was meant to be part of the base game but split for time reasons.) Look at Dark Souls 2: Rather than answer any questions about existing content, it adds three new characters hitherto unmentioned (shards of Manus) and explores those. Each is tangentially related to the base game (like a one-off mention of Raime in a shield description) but those weren't being discussed before the DLC. Bloodborne- rather than answer questions about most of the hanging threads, the DLC has you go to a dream version of the game and fight alternate versions of bosses that already existed. Orphan of Kos is a great fight, but did it fill a narrative hole that was already there? As great as Lady Maria is, nobody was asking, "But who was the doll originally?" She was just a doll. And in Dark Souls 3 it's especially noticeable- there were TONS of plot threads you guys wanted more of, but instead, they introduce a handful of new characters that are really only tangentially related to something that already exists. The only questions answered by the second DLC were posed in the first DLC, and nothing in the first DLC really fit any gaps that were already there. Great games and great DLCs, but lots of people in the community would say "Maybe Krusty is coming in the DLC", but I felt that at every turn Fromsoft proved that was never their intent. Agree/disagree?

Inter-Party Conflict

Quick one: have either of you messed around with any of the auto chess games? I usually stay away from fad genres but this one hooked me with its strategic depth.

How do you approach sharing your personal "flawed gem" games? (IE games you love with obvious problems). For example I have a soft spot for the JRPG Okage, due to it's Burtonesque artstyle and charming writing. Despite this, I know the combat/dungeons are mediocre at best. So what I do, is trick podcast hosts into mentioning it their Q&A episodes.

Uncle64

How do you feel about sports? I’m very much the archetypal ‘gamer’ in so far as I was always an ‘indoor kid’, but in my 30s I fell in love with roller derby partially because of its video game like elements (having a track persona, seeing my skills level up, seeing myself as a ‘sunbro’ to my team-mates). Have you ever had any such epiphanies?

Craig Stewart

Longform prompt suggestion: Trophies/Achievements in games today. Question: what games over the years have been your "comfort zone home-bases". Love the shows, thanks for everything!

(Greg here) A lot of women around our age (30's and 40's), who didn't grow up directly with video games or dismissed them as being the 'kid's toys' they often were seen as at the time have a lot of misconceptions about men and video games. Specifically about what kind of men play video games, and how much time that they spend on it, and how important that it is to them. Of course if a woman is totally against someone playing video games as a hobby there's not much one can do. However, I'd like to hear your advice on some of the best ways and times to bring up your hobby -- either playing video games, being a game collector, or both -- to a girl your dating without scaring her off.

Additional or alternate question. In the description for Mirrors Edge you mentioned it as kind of a one-trick game. Have there been any one-trick-pony games that you've played in the past that you really liked or that the one trick didn't get old? For myself really liked Sniper Elite 4, which is definitely a one trick game, but slowmo sniper bullets never seemed to get old for me. Also any game where you can kill Hitler with a testicle shot and get an achievement for it (this actually surprised me when I did it) I feel like is worth the price of admission. Thanks Y'all!

Limowreck

Either of you watch any SGDQ stuff? I thought I saw Gary mention on twitter something to the fact that he liked watching a run (blind wii punch-out, maybe? which was awesome!) itself but hated everything about the marathon (announcers, commentary, chat, donations, etc.). (I always watch the YouTube archives and don't care about twitch chat) Any particular runs you liked or things about speedrunning in general? I myself have always been a really big fan of watching speedruns of all kinds. For the most part I'm not really into "Kaizo" games but for some reason really enjoy watching the Mario related stuff, love the SMW kaizo stuff.

Limowreck

i’d be interested in hearing how y’all structure your days since you’re your own bosses. do y’all use any productivity apps or something similar? also, i always enjoy when you bring up parks and rec, isn’t there some sort of duckfeed presents framing that would allow a longer discussion of every season for example? thanks for all the entertainment and Viva Contact!

Jan Champion

Firstly who was your favorite teacher in school and what about them made them your favorite? And for topic of discussion, how about a discussion on bosses in games? For me bosses are some of the best parts in my favorite series (dark souls, MegaMan, MGS). What are some of your favorite bosses, what are some boss design tropes that are really over done (for example, "the bull fight, "minions4daze", and "look ma, I've got two floating hands and a big ass head")

Orkybits

I recently started DMing a 5th Edition game for some a group of new players, only one PC has played before. My question for you is what are your favorite things to do as a DM, if you have that kind of experience, or what are your favorite things DMs have done for you/your games? I want all of my players to have the best DnD experience and am curious what what has made your experience special?

Robert Mimms

You’ve touched on this a bit before, but am genuinely curious - what do you guys think about the nature of video game ‘addiction’? When is too much, too much? How do you draw boundaries between games and the real world?

MG

What in-game gadget would you most like to have a working version of in real life?

Doug Lief

I can answer this one quickly. We did a couple of episodes on Hollow Knight during an offseason of Bonfireside Chat. This was well before any additional content, however. https://www.bonfireside.chat/120

Duckfeed.tv

I hear you guys reffercing "Hollow Knight," often. Have you done a "Hollow Knight," episode? If so, where could I find it? If you haven't, then please please please please do an episode on it. No rush though, you guys do so much on a regular and consistent schedule.

Cthulhu R'lyeh Flatagan

What's the spiciest food you've eaten?

Luddekudde

How far can charm take a heavily flawed game for you? Some examples for me are Dark Cloud for its cruel and arcane weapon system, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles because the win condition is opaque and fiendishly hard, and Kirby Air Ride because it has the greatest multiplayer mode ever created in City Trial but well.. you know whats wrong with that game. I find these games super charming and remember them fondly but holy hell do I not really want to sit through them again!

James Seibel

How long does it take to edit an episode and when do you typically do it in proximity to the recording? P.s. all the music spliced in to all the shows (WOFF, BFSC etc. Are seamless and awesome)

Dan Sayer

Idea for a short or long form question but what games have had big impacts on you but for whatever reason you have never played. This can be games that became fads, games that inspired titles you have played, or games that due to technological or legal reasons are now unplayable.

Markus Blomer

Nintendo's mobile efforts have been a mixed bag bay-bee, yeah. If you could choose what genre of game and what franchise to pull from, what would you have Nintendo's next mobile game be?

Holland Hume

I’m sure it’s been discussed in episodes I just haven’t heard, but has the network ever had interest in a show based around a table top game campaign, Adventure Zone style?

Eli Leslie

What movies do you guys genuinely like, but have recieved a poor or mixed reception? My favorite movie is Moonstruck, but I know it isn't the best movie.
