Call and Response: April 2019

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Monday, March 15.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Regarding mobile gaming, iOS in particular, do you think the regrettable state of games on that platform is 1) the result of the mobile touchscreen medium itself, 2) the way Apple manages the App Store and promotes content, 3) the fact that iOS apps basically die if they are not updated annually, or some other factor?

How do you feel about how From made an entire game based on whipfest? (I'm talkin about the grappling!)

Are you guys fans of BBQ, specifically the low and slow American kind? I'd love to hear about your favourite spots and dishes. Have you had any experiences cooking this type of cuisine yourselves?

I'm 31, and I've had the huge fortune of making a platonic male friend in the last year. I work from home, and I don't drink, so that never happens. This friend is about ten years older than me, and hasn't played video games since golden axe. I'd really like to try and share my passion for gaming with him in some way, but he told me he felt totally lost when he tried playing GoldenEye some years ago. The controls were too much for him. The dude is still super open minded, so I'm wondering: what's a good entry point for a guy like him? He loves movies, so I thought of maybe something like Until Dawn, but I really don't think that game is that fun. I guess the criteria is that the game is cinematic, tells a great story, but has really forgiving or slow paced mechanics. Would DOS2 be a stretch? I appreciate your thoughts, thanks! Also, congrats on 10k, and you guys are the best. Piss Mac-Man.

Logged in to ask essentially the same question. Seconded! How do you stay organized, motivated, etc.?

Casey Woolfolk

Have you ever believed an obviously untrue thing because of a game? I need to feel better about believing there was a US/Aussie war because of Vice City, and that there was a Russian rain forest because of MGS3.

Gordon

(Greg here) Do you guys have a 'average' daily routine that you follow, like time of the day always set aside for gaming or podcasting, or do you just wing it based on what's going on?

Greg Polander

Are there any conspiracy theories that either of you personally subscribe to? If not, what is your favorite one to ponder on?

I've been thinking more lately about the importance placed on "game feel", where how well a game controls is considered a value that can erase a multitude of sins. Obviously I'd rather have a game that feels great than not, but feel like placing too much of a value on it can be a mistake. How important is it really for a game to have perfect controls and make a great first impression versus things like level design, story, or something else?

Joelle

Where do you weigh in on the idea that games with DLC are being released "incomplete"?

Ben Sapatka

I’d be curious about working conditions in game development. Games criticism rarely considers the conditions of making a game (possibly because games journalism also has terrible working conditions). There was a growing movement to factor in working conditions after Red Dead Redemption 2, and the fairly recent article about Anthem shows people care. I’m curious how you think working conditions should influence the evaluation of a game.

Question for Gary, how’s that Vampire game going, and what clan/character concept are you running with? Any fun stories so far you’d like to tell?

Eli Leslie

Possible prompt? What things age a game? What ages it more egregiously than others? What ages a game that you don’t mind? Keep up the great work! 2019 Duckfeed has been some next level shit!

TDB crossover question: i just wanna know what Pokémon Kole thinks would be tastiest

sleepysmiles

Maniac with a gun question: Gary and Kole need to pick out a tattoo for each other. It has to be at least the size of a cassette tape and you cannot meet beforehand to get the person's input. What design do you choose for each other, and where do you have it placed?

Holland Hume

Some just funnin': What are some terrible personal flaws or quirks that you try your best to fix or acknowledge but won't quite just fuck off? For example, I find it almost impossible to text people back even though I know how easy it is, and how shitty it can make people feel. I just find it. So. Hard. So what about you?

Lewis Shaw

Which game would you rather see a 2019 (or beyond) version of on the switch. Pokemon TCG or Pokemon snap.

David

what would you trade for the ability to surf?

I would like to hear something on satirical games. It was strange to me that Spec Ops could be an interesting tactical shooter while also being an indictment of shooters and their typical narratives. I find this is a general problem in the medium. Most games which attempt satire have play that exactly mirrors the target of its commentary, rather than shifting those mechanics to subvert the expectations. The story of Spec Ops is a subversion, but is the play? And do other games attempting commentary manage to make it past this trap? I don't know how many I've seen that manage it.

You are being forced to play exclusively fantasy RPGs with D&D-inspired class systems (knight, thief, mage, etc) for the rest of your life. Additionally, the build you choose will have to be the one you keep for eternity. Make your case for the most entertaining build in these types of games. Two-handing DPS machine? Sneaky rogue? Sorceries? Thanks fellas!

My wife and I have a tradition with From Software games. We spend a bunch of time in character creation, and make King Penelope, the eternal character who jumps from game to game. With Sekiro, it has a fixed character, so we don't get to have that fun. And thus far, nothing that has been in the game wouldn't have worked if the game did allow custom character appearances (and fashion souls!). How much value do you guys put on the ability to make custom characters in games? It is just a novelty, or is it something that actually increases your enjoyment? Thanks!

Adam Bucceri

I played Hypnospace Outlaw recently, and it's got me thinking. What are y'all's favorite old internet memories?

This is something you touch on briefly a lot, but how important are strict definitions of game genre, and what are useful ways and reasons to sort games into genres as opposed to ones that are unhelpful?

Audie Orlando Lily Bassoff

Signaling in games There's a balance between level scaling and difficulty difference between areas in games. Large difference between areas can lead to player frustration and confusion unless there is clear signaling that tells the player which areas to avoid. There's an aspect of risk-reward to this. Too clear signaling can remove some of the benefit from the lack of scaling, such as the sense of wonder and exploration. What is the right balance between clear signaling and letting the player figure it out on their own? What are your preferences?

Luddekudde

Most popular games/trends you just dont get why they are popular

Matt Laninovich

Back when you guys had day jobs did you ever game in the morning before work/

Ronald MacDonald

Please tell us some fun kitty anecdotes?

Tom Jacques

How do you envision gaming consoles changing in the future? This generation has seen some major shakeups to the usual console cycle (the ultra adaptable Switch, the rise of digital over physical games, and the half-step "Pro" versions of consoles part way through the generation). What do you guys predict to be the future of console gaming going forward?

Kyle C.

I know it got covered in the last episode of The Level, but since it's kind of the topic du jour at the moment, what about difficulty versus accessibility or how those things intertwine with one-another?

Jonathan Scratch

How are you getting on with your C64 minis? (And may I recommend Ocean's licensed tie-in for The Untouchables movie on C64- it's really good.)

Paul Duffus

More of a long form discussion here, but what moments in gaming or media were a crossroads that could (or did) permanently change gaming. It could be hardware changes (like cartridges to discs or discs to downloads) or like how Sega failed to keep up as a console maker. I just think it's interesting how looking back in hindsight you can easily see these decisions and the impacts they had.

Markus Blomer

Who are your favourite members of the Wu-Tang Clan? Alternatively, if this question is a bit personal, if you could have any guest on an episode of Bonfireside Chat, which member of the Wu-Tang Clan would you like it to be?

Gary Marshall

I'm guessing as a quasi-newcomer to the network (approx 6 months ago) that this may have been asked/covered previously, but I'm curious about the creative process that goes into your Abject Suffering intros. They're often quite clever and fun but also feel very improvisational. Obviously you both know the game going into the recording, but beyond that, how much pre-planning do you do before you launch into the intro? Anyway, keep up the great work, so exciting to see the network continue to grow, you both deserve it!

ELLIOT C

I've always wondered if you two have ever heard about or watched the 90s TV show Reboot. It's weird and silly yet kind of awesome, and about video games. I've never heard you two mention it and it seems like the kind of thing that would be fun to goof on. It's early computer animation so it looks real goofy, but eventually goes some weird places about alien pirates who live in the dark web.
