Call and Response: May 2019
Added 2019-05-17 03:25:35 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Sunday, May 19.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Hello chaps. I'm not terribly well versed in RPGs so I'm not sure if this has been done: can you think of any games where avatar skills and abilities improve naturally the more you use them? As in, you get stronger the more you lug stuff around, more agile the more you use the movement system etc. It seems like this would allow people to personalise their playstyle in detail and seems like it'd be a good idea, but it doesn't seem to have been used much. Is it a terrible idea?

2019-05-18 23:55:17 +0000 UTC(Greg here, and sorry if this is a long winded question, feel free to edit/cut) We all know nostalgia is a powerful emotion, and sometimes can cause more damage then good. I'm a little older then you guys so my main systems growing up were the Atari 2600, the NES, and the C64. Often on AS I'm shocked to hear you guys bash a NES game I love and then wonder if nostalgia is clouding my judgement. But when I go back to play it I find that IMHO it still holds up. And I think this applies to other media also, such as movies and books. So, this is a two part question -- how can we best try to separate nostalgia when we go back to revisit sometime, and are you (as in all humans) just not inclined to like something (a game, etc.) if it was made before you were born, and therefore don't have history with it?

2019-05-18 12:30:30 +0000 UTCAre there any artists whose work you like despite having questionable politics? I found out a few years back that Mike Nelson from MST3K identifies as a fairly religious, conservative guy and it bummed me out, but I figured since in the 20 years I've been a fan I never noticed it come through in his work, I can still enjoy his output. It also helps that Bill Corbett, who played Crow is a world-class leftist agitator so it kinda evens out. I know that the endgame for Everything to Guppy is figuring out how to separate art from artist, but in the meantime who are some people who you can't help but love despite their flaws?

2019-05-18 09:50:49 +0000 UTCHey there guys, ever since I first played Hitman 2 I’ve been a huge fan of the series. p Playing them through multiple times and always trying to perfect my hits, I was devastated when I saw the way Square Enix were carving the latest game up into episodes and I was immediately turned off. After hearing your WOF episode though I’m super excited to give it a try but just to clarify, which is the best version of the game to buy ? Big thanks

2019-05-18 06:23:45 +0000 UTCAre there any games that on paper sound perfectly made for you but after playing it you realize that it’s just not because of design or aesthetic decisions? My example is Sundered. It’s a metroidvania set in a Lovecraftian world with a hollow knight-like world and gameplay loop and some soulsborne-like elements made by the team that made the beautiful Jotun so it has a gorgeous hand-drawn art style however the inclusion of random enemy hoards and a mostly procedurally generated map (imagine hollow knight but where all the rooms kept changing everytime you died) made me burn out after a couple hours.

2019-05-18 04:25:15 +0000 UTCPolitics in games - is there a good way to handle it, and if so, what does that look like? Examples of games that included political themes but didn't completely suck / botch it horribly / use it as window dressing?

2019-05-18 02:57:16 +0000 UTCHi gang! I was curious (particularly in the light of Capcom's Resident Evil series renaissance) what long-dead or floundering franchises you would bring back from certain doom if you had unlimited resources. How would you go about bringing them into 2019 and beyond?

2019-05-17 15:55:24 +0000 UTCWhen do you tend to think a game is "finished" for you, and has that changed over time? Is it the end of the story mode? Once you get bored? As a kid who would only get games a few times a year at most, I would often try to 100% things as much as possible and would replay games two or three times. Now that I can purchase my own games and do so more than once a month on average, I find that I rarely replay games and, unless I'm super into a game, I'll move on once I finish the main story. How have your "finish points" changed over time? -Andrew

2019-05-17 15:33:09 +0000 UTCAre you guys ever thinking about doing more music based CONTENT? I really loved File Under Water and the episode (adaption decay?) about Buckner and Garcia and would much love to hear further discussion. Also: who gets the most pets, Greta or Pocket?

2019-05-17 10:38:39 +0000 UTCPossible topic idea: Romance in video games, why does it seem like so few videogames seem to get it right? Also I really enjoyed your guy's foray into MacDonald land, and I know you dont wanna keep adding to the expansive list of shows you 2 produce, but I'd listen the shit out of a whole series doing a deep dive on brand lore and characters!

2019-05-17 06:22:01 +0000 UTCWhy do you think the argument that "video games aren't art" has lasted for so long? Even though games are taken more seriously than they were 10 or 20 years ago, many people still consider video games to be a less intelligent/artistically valid medium than film or literature. Do you think this has to do with the general negative connotations many have towards the medium or do you think there is a more complex reason for the argument? I personally think there are just as many video games that can be considered art as any other medium, and wonder if this argument will ever go away. Also, do you believe every game can be considered art in some way, and what elements of a game would make you more likely to consider the game art?

2019-05-17 05:40:34 +0000 UTCWhats something you never thought you'd be into when you were younger (college ageiiiish) that you're into now? For me I never thought I'd love fancy cocktails and fashion when I was younger now its a huge thing for me. (also if you like cocktails whats your favorite?)

2019-05-17 04:38:35 +0000 UTCSo which boss WAS the kukri good for? I remember when "just use a kukri" became a great catch phrase, but never in the context of what boss or game people kept telling you it was the solution for. (Educated guess screams The Nameless King but then I never saw it mentioned elsewhere on the internet...).

2019-05-17 04:15:14 +0000 UTCWhat stylistic things turn you off or attract you to a game? Not mechanics or story, but art design, how the story is told, specific interfaces or camera concerns, etc?

2019-05-17 04:03:14 +0000 UTCHowdy! Over my thirty or so years of living on the internet, I've been a part of many online communities. Since becoming a Patreon a few months ago, I'm amazed how warm, accepting, and inviting the Duckfeed Slack has been to a newcomer. Not a trace of the toxicity commonly found in these sort of groups. What do you attribute that to? Is it intentional policing, good moderation or just a byproduct of the sort of personalities your show attracts? And as a follow-up, have you ever had a situation where someone had to be removed from the community for whatever reason? Curious as access to the Slack is a paid privilege and I could see there being a conflict with that. Thanks for all the amazing work! - Bill Tucker

2019-05-17 03:55:15 +0000 UTCDo you feel like Microtransactions/Games As Service/ Other Shitty Corporate Game Policies are becoming more inescapable? Steering clear of most AAA games has made it easy, mostly by avoiding EA and Ubisoft, but it feels like it's becoming more omnipresent. Hitman was a great example of a game with extremely frustrating nickle and dime-ing and games as service features, specifically with the elusive kill components that are now inaccessible. Curious about your thoughts. -Zack

2019-05-17 03:42:24 +0000 UTCNot sure if this should be a topic or just a quick question. What do you think the future of graphics look like? With photorealistic graphics already the standard for most big games do you think developers will continue to get more realistic or will they start to develop their own styles to stand out from the rest?
