Adaptation Decay 30: The Wizard

It's so bad.

A long time ago, it was very novel to see video games in other media. This was the appeal of Nick Arcade, another topic we covered on this show. But not even that novelty can save a bad script, and boy howdy, have we got a doozy. Corey breaks his little brother Jimmy out of an institution in order to drag him across the country and play video games for money. They meet another unsupervised pre-teen who drags them into a life of crime, as Bad Dad, the adult son, and the Kidhunter follow their tracks.

I participated in the Nintendo Challenge, which I can only assume was inspired by The Wizard, at Six Flags, Great America back in the day. It was Dr. Mario, Pin-Bot (!), and SMB3 for a certain amount of time, high score wins. It was indeed very strange to play SMB for score. I won my first group of ten, scoring a sweet Nintendo plastic cup, but fell in a subsequent round. I submit to this day that I would have been a contender if they had picked a less obscure game than Pin-Bot.

I had a Power Glove. It was even worse than people think, and that's saying something.

Loved the episode. The Accountant (2016) is a movie where autism makes Ben Affleck into Jason Bourne, so it's not just an 80's thing to make autistic people superheroes.

Ugh. I posted this before seeing Schneider’s comments today, back when I thought he was just a joke of an actor. Now I realize he’s a racist-defending joke of an actor. Disregard the above suggestion...

Great episode! It was fun with a movie about video games, but not an adaptation of a game. Another fun idea for the future would be an episode about Surf Ninjas. The Game Gear is heavily involved in the plot, and the video game and movie were made in collaboration with each other. Plus, Rob Schneider.
