Bonfireside Chat 141: Return to Ashina Castle

The Castle so nice we visited it twice. Er, three times eventually. Here we check in on our surrogate son and our surrogate father at the same time. Efficient!

@Patric I mean really every cutscene before a fight really gets me going. Owl, Genichiro, Butterfly, both fights in the Shura ending, and Isshin all just fucking ooooooze badassery. “Now then, Son of Owl. Shall we dance?”

Eli Leslie

Fwiw, as someone who has long been obsessed with samurai films, I also lose my goddamn mind when he readies his sword and says “This will only take a moment.”

Think Gary is spot on with the observation that this is a “modest” game. I had the same feeling the closer I got to the end. Also I really liked the owl fight but agree he’s under motivated.

We didn't like Salt and Sanctuary that much! But if they do a sequel I have an open mind about it.

Character motivation is ultimately what killed the 'Shura' ending for me. Owl is presented as this puppeteer-mastermind who's laid all the breadcrumbs for you up to this point and his ultimate goal is just power for power's sake? I'm 100% with Kole on this one, I love the characterization as the manipulative, abusive father but I can't stand that his vision isn't a *little* more grand than just "Hey, I wanna rule Japan too!"

One of my favorite details from the Owl cutscene is the callback to Hirata, with him performing the same move that killed you there. Also, and I won’t spoil it for people who still want to play for it, there’s another dope Owl trick you get to see in the cutscene when you forsake Kuro. That path actually has some really badass cutscenes that are definitely worth at least YouTubing. One thing I’ve realized this season is that while I’ve always really enjoyed the style and iconography associated with samurai media, I’ve never really sat and watched a samurai movie. I think this has led to me giving Sekiro a lot of good will, because when Wolf or Genichiro or Owl say/do something badass, I’m super into it at face value. Every time Wolf walks forward and does that katana thumb push thing I lose my goddamn mind.

I personally got way into Salt and Sanctuary, but had a hard time enjoying Death's Gambit. (Also, calling Death's Gambit a "Good Salt and Sanctuary" is an awfully mean thing to say about a game 2 people spent years of their life on.... meanie)
