Bonfireside Chat 142: Fountainhead Palace

This episode covers the best level in the game, as we finally use the aroma of the fountainhead to enter the divine realm, and see where all this immortality (literally) springs from.

Oh yeah! We just wanted to put all that stuff together.

Loved the episode as usual, just thought I’d point out that if you are trying to do the purification or the return ending you must complete the steps before you pray in the cave. Keep up the great work!

Yeah, that's sort of a downside of Sekiro not letting you use different weapons other than tools. As mentioned in the episode though, we think the referant is probably much more the seven branched sword than the moonlight greatsword.

There are two old women, the first one you meet shows up again where you feed the great carp to see her father, whereas the one on the ruined house in the water asks you to open the gate up and meets you there at the palace, both of them die upon completion of their quests. I believe the line " I cannot do it in this body" I believe alludes to them both being young women who have had their youth taken by the nobles of the palace. Still who knows how long they've been there. I'd also note that the Okami warriors including the leader on the tree are all women, of whom the gunfort women are descendents of. That still doesnt exactly tell us how long they've been there, or how long ago the descendants left unfortunately. I'm also surprised you guys didn't make a mention of Sekiros version of the Moonlight Greatsword and the Storm Ruler were used by the Divine Dragon and not by the player at all. It even has the same waves as the Storm Ruler, I think I'm the only person who expressed sadness you couldn't get some version of the seven branched sword, because of the other games letting you use these "godly" weapons, however disappointing they might be to use. Thanks again guys, looking forward to the next episode!

On the pot nobles, I thought I'd add that the one in Hirata, at least, becomes a red-eyed carp which, according to the eyes from the one in Mibu, can never become a Great Carp.

The Divine Dragon was like having part of Metal Gear Rising in the middle of Sekiro. Loud J-Rock would have made that fight even better.

"60% damage is modest for Sekiro." Perfect example of how the difficulty creep has slowly drained fun from these games at a parallel rate. I agree that catering so specifically to the challenge hogs has compromised their design philosophy, and for no tangible gain; the difficulty dragon those types are chasing will never be caught, and the rest of us are left to lament how good a game could've been potentially if the same effort was put into making the world more engaging aside from how hard it is to express your "kill" verb.

I thought about that too, but you do explicitly get carried there from a wedding box, so I don't know. I tend to think of it as a permeable dimension barrier thing more than just a remote area. If it were a remote area, it'd be weird that it didn't intersect with the ministry politics. -GB

I do think being able to tune such things would have positively impacted my overall experience. -GB

I've really been enjoying your Sekiro coverage. But I'm also pretty excited for whatever you cover next. Looking forward to something different after quite a lot of Sekiro.

Hearing y'all talk about damage numbers makes me ever so glad that I played Sekiro modded. Upon reflection, I don't think I would recommend the game to someone if they could only get it on console.

In response to the Great Carp/Pot Noble questline, I have come to believe that Fountainhead is not another dimension, but a real place. I cannot recall exactly where, but I remember reading something about that where the Guardian Ape is originally encountered is where the waters of the Fountainhead go to pool up. The only remaining concern for me is the fact that I am not sure where these two areas meet up, as there is no physical connection present in the game world.

That's neat! That hadn't occurred to me. -GB

Upon playing through Fountainhead the 2nd time, I've become convinced that the Old Dragons of the Tree are the final form of the mist noble transformation. Like the Research Hall, we're seeing the mutation progress as we move forward through the level, and the nobles get more feeble as they ascend. The Old Dragons even have the flutes. I think that they succeed in their attempts at immortality and dragonhood, but become feeble, subservient dragons.

Matthew Lee

On one hand: status effects in Sekiro feel like a vestigial limb from years of From making RPGs. On the other hand: I wouldn't trade Sekirold chowing down on nobles for the world.

Eric Nagurney

The "Old" status effect is maybe one of my favorite weird status effects in a video game. The first time it hit me and Sekiro gained 60 or so years I laughed.
