Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch January 2020

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Sunday, January 19.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

We recorded this already so I will say for my part that Gary Indiana is a stankpit. -GB

Aw man, I realize I'm a couple days late, but here goes: Gary - have you ever considered moving to Gary, Indiana? Kole - Which store do you prefer to shop at, Kole's or Ross?

Gabriel Tindall

Gary: Favorite MTG set? Kole: Favorite Jackbox game? Xoxoxo

Quick one for Gary: What's the next game, if any, in line for a Power Worlds treatment? Do you have any long-term plans as far as how many you want to make overall?

Holland Hume

This may overlap a bit with something I sent in specifically about Dragonfall, but since playing it for the show I have thrown myself fully into Shadowrun stuff. I'm streaming Returns and Hong Kong in my spare time. I've even started relistening to the Shadowrun MIMP season. What was the last thing that got you guys really hungry for lore?

Michelle

Two of my top three most played games of 2019, revealed to me via PSN wrap up, were Enter the Gungeon and Wasteland 2. Both are awesome recommendations I got through the network. My question is: if you could level up for the rest of your life in either a gungeon or a wasteland what’s it gonna be?

Sealdog

Aliases... do either of you have a go-to in your hip pocket, a Rusty Shackleford or the like?

Murder She Rothenberger (Wrote In Burger)

Have you all thought about doing a podcast covering old horror movies? Specifically ones from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s that are less well known. Would love to hear you all talk about early Cronenberg films.

Brad Ballard

What is the process for writing the intro music for your shows? Are there any songs that almost made the cut before being replaced with something else?

Ben Sapatka

What are your thoughts on game delays in general? In more specific how to you feel about Cyberpunk getting delayed but not long enough to release it without resorting to more massive crunch.

As little as 18 months ago, my wife and I shared our house with two parakeets and three big dogs. We're now down to one dog. All died of age-related sicknesses. Our house was once a buoyant zoo (literally and figuratively), but now it feels empty, cold and quiet. I could go on, but I won't put you through that. My question is, how do you two personally deal with grief? And, to make this a game question, have you ever played a video game that grappled with grief well, or portrayed it uniquely, in a way that hit home?

Douglas

(Greg here). I was curious about the financial side of things as far as the network goes. Without asking you guys to share any data that you don't feel conferrable with, I know both of you depend on the Patreon for your living expenses. How does the breakdown of the expenses for a typical month look like? Is the money always evenly split between Kole and Gary or are there times when one has permission to take in more then the other? Are the two of you able to live alright now as opposed to when both of you had jobs? I know there's a bunch of YouTuber's who make enough from their channel that it's their full time job, but you two are the only podcasters I'm aware off who does that with a Patreon.

Greg Polander

I've really enjoyed your written output in the past: Infinity Engineers, the DS3 NPC article, Hex Crank, and the blog were all great reads. I can absolutely see why the time and effort required to do long form written analyses compared to the relatively free form, discursive format of podcasts (as well as their much wider reception) makes it a pretty uneconomical prospect, but I might as well ask: do either of you have any written articles that you're planning or would like to do?

Lewis Shaw

Not IRL, but I did have friends help me out over the internet. Aside from Smash Bros (which has always been my go to), the ones I've tried so far with friends are Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves. I'm looking to grab Street Fighter 5 down the line once the Champion Edition releases, since one of my friends is really into it and says it's the most accessible in the series.

I was listening to an older episode--DOOM, I think--and you mentioned reaching out to another podcast host to guest. How does that look? Like, do you "sell yourself" to a prospective guest that might now know who you are (we have this many listeners, we reach this many people, we've been going this long, etc)? Or is it more informal?

Tom Jacques

Hey y’all! I was wondering if either of you had a chance to listen to the Monster 25th Anniversary set yet. I would be interested to hear your takes on the extras, there are certainly a lot of them.

Katie Coleman

Now that your work is paying off, what personal projects or goals (non-work related) have you got or are thinking about?

Lewis Shaw

Out of interest, what fighting games have you tried? Did you have friends helping you out irl? I have a similar thing with fighting games. They appeal to me, but I'm turned off by the insane skill ceiling and the idea of just getting minced online.

Lewis Shaw

When you all made the transition to being fully Patreon funded and quit your day jobs, was it a net increase or decrease to your stress levels? Did you feel less stress because you were able to support yourselves doing what you love without having to deal with outside work bullshit? Or was it more stressful because you lost your 9 to 5 safety net?

Ruky Saavedra

Do games ever make the jump from being "work games" to "play games?" A game that you'd never otherwise play that ends up getting picked for the show that just ends up getting folded into the regular rotation? If so, which, why and how?

Matt Bixler! Hello!

You both have probably covered this on another podcast before, but do either of you have a favorite 7/10 game or series? Maybe a mediocre, but lovable experience that hits just enough of the right notes to be a lot of fun mixed with some flaws?

Mark Mahler

What are you reading recently? Also do you guys have any suggestion of a book of dark/gothic fantasy with a cool unique world? Plus points if it has some horror element in it

Rodrigo Campos Varandas

Lately, I've been getting more and more into fighting games after mostly ignoring them. I initially figured that it would be too much of a timesink to try and master the inputs and mechanics of each game and was scared off because of it, but with some help from friends I managed to understand the intricacies of a variety of fighting games and have a newfound appreciation for them. Are there any games or genres of games you initially were turned off from, but managed to get an appreciation/fondness of later on?

Kelerak

1. Music in games. What games are made an icon by the soundtrack, what games are let down by their sound? I am very much won over for a game by the music, whether that’s a score, excellent foley or great licences music. Some games I am won over just by hearing the soundtrack first (Stellaris was an example of this for me). I think music can convey so many emotions and supplement a story line so much. The ambient but deep melody over the epilogues in Fallout New Vegas springs to mind. Lots and lots that could be covered on this topic. And apologies if you have already done this and I didn’t know

Dan Sayer

Hey guys, it was awesome when you did an episode on the Resi 2 remake so soon after release. Any chance you'll do the same for Nemesis? It's a rarity to have you guys discuss a brand new game on WOFF, but it's always fun. Actually - saying that: have you ever thought of doing something like a poll where you nominate 6 upcoming games, and let the community vote on one for you to play and discuss around release? Like a "twice a year" kind of thing?

Badger Catcher

What dead or dormant game series would you revive or remake? Similarly, what remakes or revitalization have let you down?

Markus Blomer

What is a thing you cat does that is unique to them? For example one of ours, Genny (short for Genesse) likes to scream and lick beer foam.
